    Glue or not to glue

Thanks, I and the other contributors will, according to the long established principles of panel construction and floor laying using T&G boards.

    Glue or not to glue

You seem to understand the principles of wood movement but not the role of T&G boarding in dealing with it. The whole point of T&G is to allow individual board movement. To achieve this the boards must  not be packed up tightly, let alone glued. The consequence of doing so is increased risk of...

    No Fault Evictions

Would a government elected by 5 people in 5 be a democracy? I don't think so. So, what would be an acceptably democratic proportion, 2, 3 or 4 out of 5? And how would it be achieved?

Cheltenham Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design

I certainly remember them having been to 17 or 18 over the years of its existence; easy for me being a local. I was able to attend on the opening preview evenings courtesy of invitations to my mate Bill who never wanted to go so he passed them over to me. He never did find out why he was on the...

Am I really that out of touch?

Looks like a scam and a very amateurish one at that. Try upping the number to be purchased; the price stays the same. SDS London doesn’t even sell anything from their website. Brian

    Wood ID help please

I think it's oak. The colour is not right for ash which would be lighter. I'd say oak but not necessarily quercus robur. Is this from an imported manufactured item? Brian

Hot water low pressure effect on temperature.

Are you referring to boiler circulating pressure or domestic water mains pressure? Sounds like you're referring to the latter. Loads of water at low pressure ain't going to move very fast. Low flow rate between boiler and tap means longer transit times. Longer transit time means more heat...

    Statins and statistics

You can calculate your risk of heart disease using the QRISK2 algorithm but you need all the relevant data to feed into it. I did this a couple of years ago because I didn't believe what my GP practice nurse was telling me. My risk of heart disease over the next 10 years was calculated to be...

    Axminster Workshop AW2606B Bandsaw

I bought this one new about 18 months ago and have been quite pleased with it. I mounted it on retractable castors for ease of movement. 4 niggles:- 1. Dust extraction useless (as most bandsaws are) but now much improved with my mod. 2. Guide bearing thumbscrews prone to loosening. Now replaced...

    Statins and statistics

It's an economic equation. It's cheaper to dish out statins as widely as possible rather than treat the heart disease there would otherwise be. Therefore we all benefit. We are crying out for the NHS to be more efficient; this is one way of doing it. Brian

Combi machine help for a newbie

I think your second question is the more important one. The usual reason for choosing the combo route is lack of space for separate macines. If you have space then separates will give you a more flexible setup for future development. On the other hand, don't forget that free space is to be...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

In those two sentences, Jacob, you have revealed your basic philosophy of politics, ie, when a new government is elected, they become the 'new establishment' and, as such, you're naturally hostile to it. So, just like JC, you'd rather be in permanent opposition and not achieving anything as...

Halogen to LED. Can anybody throw some light on my problem?

Job done, 2-way switches fitted in lieu of the dimmers and everything now hunkydory. Now tackling the bathroom GU5.3's which entails chopping out the 11.4 V power supplies and changing the bulb holders to GU10's. Easy really, apart from working in the cramped, hot and dusty loft space. Brian

    Veneer edges

I would approach this in a rather more positive way. I would say to the owner that recreating the present finish is impossible, at least for me it is. However if you could accept something different but in keeping, I might be able to do something that will keep them going for a few more years...

Halogen to LED. Can anybody throw some light on my problem?

Because the main 2-way switches wouldn't work. There is the remote possibility that the dimmer position switches might be used when entering the kitchen from the garage or conservatory, so I'll keep that aspect operational. Not a job for the present. It works and has done for the last 17 years...

Halogen to LED. Can anybody throw some light on my problem?

Thanks for that tip. The dimmers are also switched giving 2-way operation hence the grey wires in the basic switch. I can't see that we're ever going to need to dim the kitchen lights (was there ever a need?) so I'm going to do away with them and fit a basic 2-gang, 2-way switch. Brian
