    Joke Thread II

That reminds me of an incident I experienced as a young engineer. I was invited to comment on a paper which had been doing the rounds for some time. I think I picked it up at about Issue8. I went to the next meeting to discuss the document. The chairman was also the author. After everyone had...

why are reversible routers and bits not a thing?

The difference is the orientation of the grain angle compared with direction of feed. Turning the cutter over and rotating in the opposite direction will only work if you have a symmetrical cutter profile, eg straight, or circular as in the above video. Brian

    Great Service from Festool

Yes you've had good service from Festool but I suspect all the communications have been from the courier. I've had a lot of packages coming and going recently and the typical sequence of messages is 1. We have picked up your parcel from XYZ Ltd 2. Your parcel is now at our local depot 3. Your...

    NEW Arrivals from Milescraft

My experience with the medium bottle is that below 1/3 full it becomes frustrating to use because if you leave the bottle standing upright the glue in the delivery tube soon drains down. This is because the nozzle is not air tight even with the cap on. To fill it up again needs a lot of...

Is that a valve I see on the Gluemate cap? The Gluebot certainly lacks one. Brian

    Simple sharpening from 1900s

I seem to remember the large diameter whetstone at my school (pupil powered) was about 2' dia. (metric came in some years later!). I've just done a little exercise on my trusty CAD package and found that the concavity across a 1/4" bevel would have been 0.0007" ie, less than a thou. Distinct? Brian

Making a stand for a small bandsaw

Just rushed this out over a cup of coffee:- Jacob's, with its deep aprons, is a better way to go for stiffness Brian

Making a stand for a small bandsaw

I'd go even simpler and use halving joints, much easier where you've got 2 rails coming onto the legs ay the same height. What size timber will you be using? This will have some influence on the design, eg. will bracing be needed. Brian

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

No , it's KW.hr aka a Unit It's Power times Time, not Power divided by Time How come? The faster the heat transfer the shorter the time for energy to escape the system

    Jet JWDS-2244OSC-M Oscillating Drum Sander

I would have thought its smaller brother, the 16-32 would big enough for chopping boards. I only use mine as an accurate thicknesser for thin items. It's only ever loaded with P120 with final sanding being done by other means. It is a faff to change the loadings but it's not too bad once you get...

    Spitfire Mk.VB

Ah, Rotol, you've just flipped me back half a century. It's where I spent a lot of my apprenticeship. Rotol was was a joint venture set up in 1937 by ROlls-royce and BrisTOL Aeroplane Co, to make propellers. By the end of the war they had produced over 100,000 props. They were taken over by...

Sold Workshop Downsizing - large Startrite 440R Bandsaw & Power Feeder

This bandsaw was purchased as a 3ph machine to get its extra power in comparison with the 1ph equivalent. It was marketed as having a really strong frame designed for heavy cutting with big, highly tensioned blades. Spec:- Bandwheel Diameter 440mm {cast iron} Bandwheel speed...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Today I finished making this castor dolly for my new Axi bandsaw. I used these retractable castors. I was aiming at not having to drill holes in my new toy. Mounting them on the board means that the don't protrude as much as if attached to the legs. A much neater and more ergonomic solution than...

Sanding rolls for axm dual drum sander

Mine is an old Jet. I just cut the 6" down the middle and that provides 2 loadings that replicate the original design. The problem with the EFA products is that they only do 120 and 180. Brian
