    Clamping/ Press advice

A couple of explanations would be appreciated. Why not PU and what is 'too much' pressure? Brian

New 'budget' mitre saw recommendation - Erbauer/Bosch/other?

I bought one of these Hyundai saws 6 months ago and it has proved to be fine. Despite its title, it is a compound mitre saw, one of the pics in the ad shows it's vertical angle adjustment. I advised Screwfix and Hyundai about it but.......... The only problem I encountered was the mitre click...

Sold Lots of wood for sale.

I think you need to be more specific. Species, length, width and thickness for each piece. Brian

    Glue advice needed...

In this case I used a 56lb weight pressing down on 32mm MDF. I used 7 x 0.6mm veneers and ended up with a 4.5mm thick ply. If PU is allowed to expand when curing it is going to have very little strength. Brian

    Glue advice needed...

If it's properly clamped between 2 substantial boards it should not expand.

    I can see the floor!!

More and more floor space appears as my downsizing exercise progresses. The prospective new owner, who lives nearby, keeps calling in and drools over it - he's a car enthusiast. Brian

    Glue advice needed...

I had a similar problem with making clock gears out of self made plywood using veneers and PVA. The problem being that too much moisture was being introduced and it would not stay flat as it cured. Problem solved by the use of polyurethane, PU, glue which has no water content. A bit messy to use...

Metabo HC260 planner thicknesser in Wales for £250

Looks a bit suspicious to me. Lousy photos, described as 'as new' but rusty, reduced from £500 to £250. However worth a look at if you happen to live in Bargoed. Brian

    Hardened wood glue removal

In all likelihood the split will open up again as PVA glue never hardens completely and will move under stress. I assume this is the bench top. If so make sure it is well attached to the frame to keep the split closed

    Hardened wood glue removal

Is that Gorilla PVA {the white stuff} or PU, the foaming brown stuff which was the original Gorilla product? If PVA gentle heat will soften it such that it can be scraped off. If the deposits are of variable thickness it's worth sanding which will remove the thinner areas and the frictional heat...

    Spindle moulder tooling

Do you mean something like these. As the ad states they're pretty rare these days.. The solution I came up with was to use a variable angle cutter with the blades set horizontal. This gave just enough clearance for the block retaining screw, but I had to reduce the thickness of the screw head to...

    Computer says no ...

My wife got an invite for the latest COVID and flu jabs for the over 75's although she hadn't reached that milestone, whereas I had but had to book them under my own initiative. Go figure Brian

    Prezzion Pizza

Sitting here on a cold and frosty morning waiting for the loggy to heat up the workshop and musing over a must-have tool on offer from Axy. Yes, it's the FESTOOL Pizza Cutter:- My initial reaction was 'what's wrong with the simple wheel on a handle?'. Next, what else could it be used for? A...

    Outdoor plant labels

Will they be stuck in the ground? If so lacquer won't last 5 minutes, varnish might last 10 minutes but don't count on it. They'll make a nice present and a quick coat of spray lacquer will add to their attractiveness. With or without a coating the giftee will probably get several years use out...

    Another "Which Planer/Thicknesser"

I bought my s/h Metabo for £390 nearly a year ago and I've been quite impressed by it's performance. I've seen decent ones advertised recently for as much as £500. The length of table is short but adequate for most hobbyists. I recently flattened and thicknessed a 3.5m length of sapele with no...

    Joint Suggestion

Here's a suggestion if you have a 45deg V-groover and a straight cutter for your router (see attachment, scuse drawing, done with finger on mobile) First cut a channel across the back of my the board to a depth of about 2/3 the board thickness and twice as wide as it's depth. In the middle of...
