    British Sumer Time Note

I'm reading Michael Moseley's book on Better Sleeping at the moment (boy do l need it). In it he refers to effects of the hour change. Apparently 1.5billion people in 70 countries change their clocks twice a year. This disturbance causes a significant 24% increase in heart attacks associated...

A little truth for a change.

    Pun intended?

    Wood ID please?

That rich brown heartwood and creamy sapwood looks very like my laburnum although l'm not familiar with the bark. I can't say the reputed toxicity affected MEeeeeeee.........

    Home library

Have a look at my efforts (post13) in woodworker432's thread on shelving. They show that varying or adjustable shelves can make interesting features in themselves rather than just a method of storing books. You may want to store your library in subject or author categories which may well...

    Repair chair leg

Cut a notch with a chisel or start the drill perpendicular to slope and then adjust the angle as it bites into the wood. Brian

    Repair chair leg

I would use 2 6mm s/s threaded rod dowels and epoxy resin. Drill 2 holes in the top section and set in the dowels. When the resin is set drill 2 clearance in the lower section and trial fit. Hold the lower part upright and half fill the holes with resin. Also coat joint surfaces with resin...

Is there such a thing as a non-stick clamping caul blocks?

I use bits of laminate flooring. I notice you haven't used any protection on the sash jaws to avoid indentation. Also protect the sash bar. If this were oak and using a water based glue, you could get a nasty black stain. Brian

Replacing large lifting garage door with timber partition and normal door.

I'm also thinking of something similar on a single garage. At the moment my plan is to replace the existing up-and-over door with a roller type and then build a sound proofing stud wall just behind it. It will incorporate a 4' wide access door. Brian

    Quiet Shop Vac?

A year and a week on and no, I haven't used it seriously yet but the day when I will need it in a much smaller workshop is getting ever closer. I have ideas on using it with a cyclone collector all mounted in a tower configuration to give a minimal footprint. Brian

Advice on potential purchase of a workshop

If he's nearby I'd get down there and have a chat. Go through the list with him and see how he's built up the valuation. You'll still need to do some research to make your own assessment but you'll have a much better idea of the setup. This standard of machinery holds its value so if you have...

What is a proper jointing technique?

I think you have misinterpreted the way to present a bowed board to the planer. The bow should point upwards such that ends are supported on the infeed table. Push the workpiece over the cutter but don't apply any downward pressure, just let gravity do the work. This will remove material from...

What is the name and optimal screw placement for this common workbench leg setup?

Can't help with a name but if you use glue and clamps on all mating surfaces, you could do it with no screws. Or you could use a minimal number of screws temporarily in lieu of clamps. Brian

What angle should screws be with a 45d gallow shelf brackets?

A, but not the easiest to achieve in practice

    Sold Roller Glue Spreader

This glue spreader may be a bit scruffy but it works perfectly well. It was in need of a bit of TLC when I got hold of it, the main problem being the transfer roller bushes were shot. These were machined out and new ones inserted. £25 +P&P or collect from GL19

    Designing a new workshop

Your concept sounds very similar to what I had based around my Felder combo. I planned the DX system before the w/s was built and so was able incorporate ducts in the concrete floor to service the saw, thicknesser and spindle aux suction. I had an overhead duct which extracted from the spindle...

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

I think you're referring to the Acer family which shouldn't be stacked with stickers as they induce a permanent discolouration deep into the timber. Brian

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

Nice ruler If you're going to mill it into 25mm planks there's no way to stop it splitting. If you were to leave it in the round for a couple of years with the ends waxed you stand a better chance of keeping it intact. If you're intending to use it for stringing or other decorative needs you...

    Chip extractor 100mm - quiet

Having had some experience with your machine😉 I think the Festool will work well as the airflow path up over the cylinder is well defined, ie, it's not drawing in any spurious air. Charnwood do a good range of adaptors. Brian
