I don't sell them for anywhere near what they could go for. We're talking hundreds, not thousands :)
I think Staunton will make a handmade board, to order, starting at around £1000 and going up to the £4 or £5k range.
I didn't start off with the intention of selling them, but I've made 6 and sold them all. Haven't found a buyer for the black framed one yet, but I expect I will sooner or later.
There's a well established technique for making chess boards, a quick trip to youtube should show it - it involves gluing strips together.
I did a mini WIP of a similar board here
It didn't go totally to plan.
As I said here regarding the first board:
Had to do a lot more sanding than I intended - and I don't have a drum sander :(
Only one of personal taste. If I was paying for a board I'd like to think I was paying for a solid chunk of timber, not a skin as thick as a piece of paper.
I posted these up elsewhere on the forum, but I think they got lost in the general posts - putting them here because I'm so proud of them :)
2 Chessboards - both Bolivian rosewood & maple.
This one was made to order - 52mm squares.
This one, I'm yet to find a buyer for- 56mm squares.
No idea really - but just found this about "The New British Standard for UK number plates, BS AU 145e" which came into effect Sept 1st 2021
Solid black digits (NEW). Two-tone/3D effect fonts of any kind are no longer allowed. This is for ANPR cameras...
My wife got pulled for having non-standard number plates several years ago - since then I've seen a lot more that are a lot worse.
I think the raised letters are called 4D, as opposed to 3D which are flat but have 'printed shadows' to make them appear raised.
Finished another two boards this weekend - both Bolivian rosewood & maple.
This one was made to order - 52mm squares.
This one, I'm yet to find a buyer for- 56mm squares.
Did that - albeit out of a bit of steel 'cuz thats what I had knocking about at work, and a few grub screws ground to points and locktite'd in. Worked a treat :)
It's actually from a pillar drill - it's been in my workplace since I started there, and management decided we needed upgrading to the 21st century.
I've never seen a vice like that before, and knowing my luck I'd give it away only to find it was the worlds last working example of the most...
Dead easy.
"Two farthings = One Ha'penny.
Two ha'pennies = One Penny.
Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit.
Two Thrupences = A Sixpence.
Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob.
Two Bob = A Florin.
One Florin and One Sixpence = Half a Crown.
Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note.
Two Ten Bob Notes =...
We don't have problems, we have solution opportunities.
This weeks opportunity involves a rosewood and maple chessboard I'm making for a commission. I've made the board (12mm thick), making sure to carefully mark the back of all the pieces so any tear out, dents and problem surfaces are on the...
I picked up this Jerrims vice that was destined for the scrap.
My wife has asked if I'd like to donate it to the small firm she works at, but it's so unusual I'd like to know a bit more about it, especially if it might be worth anything, before I blindly give it away.
The normally 'fixed' jaws...
