Yet another “What wood is this”... sorry!

Not a clue - but that second piece is stunning.

Axy AC216TS or Draper 82385 Table Saw.

I'm just an average weekend woodist with a small single garage workshop. I make small stuff - boxes, models, miniature furniture etc, so accuracy in a TS is one of my main requirements. I have a cheap site saw that I inherited years ago, and finally decided to spend the cash and buy the...

    Christmas craft fair ideas?

Not really - just fairly simple boxes made from mahogany/beech (so I suppose a kind of Christmas colour scheme :) )

Any idea what this timber is?

I can believe it lasts a good long time - I was amazed by how dense it is. I have pieces of oak and mahogany here of the same approximate size, and that piece of pine must be getting on for twice as heavy. At first I thought there must've been a steel rod down the middle of it ! And the comment...

Any idea what this timber is?

Thanks :) . I don't think I've seen this before. Google says its a common American species, here in the UK maybe not so common.

Any idea what this timber is?

I found a couple of table legs under my dads shed. He's been gone 20 odd years now, and he would never of dreamed of buying 'new' timber, so these were either given to him, or it was a skip/tip find. They've been sat in my shed for about 5 years, I didn't think they were anything special until...

What type of box catch is this?

    A bloke with big bowls.

That makes sense Ian. On the extreme right of the photo you can just make out the shaft and one of the bearings, the other bearing must be out of shot. I find it hard to believe anything could hold that mass of wood onto the plate (not that I'm disputing it), especially when it started to...

    A bloke with big bowls.

Haha, I know it can never be more then intellectual curiosity - if I tried to make something that big I'd have to stand outside my workshop and work on it through an open window :D ............. but the finished work does look so striking and beautiful ........... hmmm, I wonder where I put my...

    A bloke with big bowls.

Thank you for that - the more I find out the more interested I become :)

    A bloke with big bowls.

Ok, I know its not technically a bowl, but 'A guy with a big cup' wouldn't have got your attention :) I found this magazine cover on the net, and as a complete novice its really piqued my interest. What does something like that weigh when it was first put on the lathe (ie before it was...

    Hi - An introduction :)

I did think at the time that maybe I'd been a touch over generous offering a whole shelf so quickly

    Hi - An introduction :)

What a brilliant welcome - Thank you all :) I think you're right Jimi - there's definitely a family resemblance ! I cant post pictures yet, but I'll put a snap up of Kaye & Indie (Or 'sprocket 'n' tubbs' as I call them haha) as soon as I can. As I was drooling over pictures of workbenches and...

    Hi - An introduction :)

How my dogs have allowed me to become a wood butcher. Once, we had one dog (a daft staffy), and the Mrs had a jazzed up Seat Ibizia as her car. At Christmas we rescued a staffy cross. A staffy crossed with - I am fairly sure - a giraffe......... with maybe some kangaroo or springbok back...
