    Hardwood buying advice.

I actually have a decent tablesaw and a Triton TP125 thicknesser. :) It doesn't have to be 44x44, anything I can get some approx 2"x2" blanks out of would be fine. Those timbers you mentioned would be absolutely ideal ! The biggest problem I have is lack of experience - I don't know what to...

    Hardwood buying advice.

Thanks Ian. I hadn't thought about contacting local businesses that use timber, I had emailed several local suppliers of timber, explained I was just getting to the position where I needed to buy small amounts, and would they consider selling me offcuts that they might normally have trouble...

    Hardwood buying advice.

Right, I'll get this out the way - at 50+ I've never bought any timber that didn't come from B&Q and came wrapped in plastic ! Up till now I've survived on skip finds and gifted/reclaimed timber, but more people are starting to ask me to make projects for them, so I may actually have to spend...

    Moderately priced table saw

I think you'll have a great problem finding one for retail sale. I thought they were illegal, but Steves post sums it up nicely. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/dado-blades.120491/

    Disk Storage

StevieB A NAS (network attached storage) is aimed at multiple computers having access to files on one box. Is that what you need, or do you just need a backup for your files that will be accessed by just one computer? If it's the latter, a DAS (direct attached storage) is much easier, and its...

    Ebay Offcuts and Timber

Serendipity. Looking for a particular hardwood I stumbled over this advert half an hour after reading this thread :) Yandles selling 1 tonne of hardwood offcuts for £25 ! (collection only) (Edit:error)...

    New tools?

My wife bought me a Bosch pillar drill a few months back as part of my Christmas box. Today ordered myself one of the lower end Veritas dovetail saws :)

glue joints opening on cutting/chopping board

Oh - and if the glue has been left in an unheated shed and you think it's frozen :- h++p://blog.titebond.com/page/how-to-store-your-wood-glue-for-longer-life

glue joints opening on cutting/chopping board

Surely the boards should still be clamped up 6 hours after glue up? Something like a chopping block I'd leave the clamps on - as many clamps as I could get on it - for at least 24 hours. Edit - As said above, temperature is the big enemy of pva glue. I think its Titebond 3 that can be used...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Clearing out the photo's on my phone ready for a new year and found these I made about this time last year. It's a door stop, two pieces of 1 1/2" round steel bar, (turned on the lathe + a bit of milling) that extend to the bottom of the base, which has lead shot in it. Can't remember now, but...

    DW745 Table Surface not flat

Is it the insert plate you're talking about - the bit the blade pokes through? Normally you can shim those to the height you need.

    Chess Cabinet

mtmwood on YT is an absolute star when it comes to boards. I followed his methods when I did my effort - much easier than trying to glue individual squares to a base. Having said that, this guy might be worth a watch, he makes one here out of veneers that looks very nice. My effort, beech &...

    DW745 Table Surface not flat

I don't know about that particular saw, but 0.5mm tolerances sound pretty good on a saw designed for throwing around a building site :D

Is your Google-fu stronger than mine?

If it's just the aluminium looking bit you're after, and you're in no particular rush (I may be off work for at least another 4 weeks + any covid related isolations), they look easy enough to make on the cnc gear at work. If you could send a quick sketch detailing exactly what you want - to...

    Game Changing Tools

My 'game-changing' wood work nomination is the 2010 Ford Kuga Titanium. My wife bought one, and when she tried to put it in the garage found it to be about 3" too long to fit - I went from having a fold down shelf and a cupboard to having a dedicated single car garage workshop !! :D

    Tier 4

I work in further education and we've been told we'll be at work (and hence the building will be open) no matter what tier we're in. Also from Gov.uk - Tier 4: Stay at Home

    Tier 4

Working in education I cant say I've really noticed any difference in any of the levels. Our classes are the same size (if not actually larger than previous years), albeit with a bit more remote teaching than we've normally done. Social distancing is impossible. Having said that, with a staff...

    Imperial vs Metric

In #126 of this thread I wrote about examples of official NASA documentation that says things like "The cross-bar is 4.82 metres long, and has 15 3/8's inch holes spaced 32mm between centres" haha (But tbh, I wouldn't think twice about asking for 6ft of 50x50mm :D )
