    Miniature Traction Engine

Rather than muscle in on Nigels thread, I've posted my build up here

    'Hula' Engine.

This is my take on the compressed air engine design by Philip Duclos, published in the book 'Steam & Stirling Engines You Can Build Vol2 (1994). The original plans are in Imperial - to me that's OK for woodwork, but for precision my mind works in metric :) First, I built the model in...

    Miniature Traction Engine

Weirdly, I made a fly-wheel today for my 'free-time' project at work !

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Being dropped off at my grandads house on Saturday morning while my parents did the shopping, and spending my day playing 3 card brag and pontoon (Black Jack). Grandad would let me pick 7 horses for a 10p accumulator, he'd fill out the slips and I'd go to the bookies to put the bets on...

    Cut off/scrap fever

I think the biggest factor is if you're a professional or an amateur. If you're professional, you've got someone else buying your materials. Us amateurs will reach into a wood chipper to grab a nice bit of walnut

    Cutting/chopping board

Another belt sander job - took about 15mins to get to the point of using an orbital. I think you'll be surprised how quick a belt sander with coarse grit removes material.

    Matabo bandsaws - any users?

I had a Metabo sliding mitre saw and thought the quality was pretty good. I'm looking to upgrade my bandsaw to something a little bigger. I've got a tiny shop, so it cant be anything industrial. The Bas318 Precision looks interesting, at 170mm doc its almost double my current capacity, but it...

    Wood glue

Look in vape shops for their mixing bottles. Lots of sizes and styles in the 10ml to 200ml range, made from plastic the glue wont adhere to, and generally all come with very fine nozells...and dirt cheap to :) I use them for storing glue, french polish, IPA, meths etc etc

    Wood glue

I've got some Gorilla pva, works great and £8 litre at Jeff's place. Recently switched to TB3 for it's lower temperature usefulness - I struggle to find that for less than about £20 a litre.

    New Business

Sign me up - I've lost nearly 3 stone since September (through unpleasant (not life threatening) illness) - I look like I've aged 15 years ! haha.

    Temperature & glue-ups

All I've done in my shed for the last couple of weekends is mill up the timber I salvaged and reclaimed over the summer months. Finished the stiles from a couple of the big mahogany'ish-looking fire doors I liberated, several hardwood door frames and a hardwood front door I was given. UK temps...

    Collet advice

It might just be the angle of the photograph, but the shank on the cutter looks much bigger than the hole in the collet - a lot more than 0.35mm. There's a Makita 1/4 collet on ebay for £17

    Collet advice

The tool shank too big to fit in the collet? Sounds like you have a metric 6mm collet. Edit: Sorry, not that.

    Newbie question on Treated wood

I was really intimidated going anywhere other than a big-box store for timber. It is worth having a look around though. I found a softwood sawmill by me that sells 'rough' 4"x1" timber - if you have a planer that could be perfect and very cheap. (It's almost a 5m length) Or bit higher...
