Noob question but do cross cut sleds go out of square over time?

Make the runners out of an old plastic type chopping board - they never go out of true

Your best (and worst) / most surprising woodworking related purchase this year

My most surprisingly good purchase was a Stanley #80 ebay special. Having never used a scraper before, I was stunned at how quickly it removed paint and varnish, and beautifully finished off a plank of rosewood I've been having tear-out issues with.

    DIY edge belt sander

I make a lot of chopping boards and chess boards - end grain for choppers and both end and long grain for chess. I tried using a sled, didn't work great for me, too laborious, too easy to leave deep gauges in the surface. I tried using my thicknesser - that worked ok, but I'm very limited on...

Draper 200mm Cast Iron Table saw £200 ?!?!

I've got the saw that this thread is all about :) I was hoping someone who'd bought it could post up the sizes - not to worry, I'm home now.

Draper 200mm Cast Iron Table saw £200 ?!?!

Sorry for bringing back an old thread, but I've got some unexpected free time on the mill here at work, and I (obviously) can't measure my saw which is at home. Does anyone have any accurate dimensions of the tabletop mitre slots, or any 'official' standard size? I want to make a couple of ali...

    Chopping board finish advice

Mineral oil. I wouldn't consider using any type of vegetable or food based oil - but my wife uses one board for bread, one for veg and a different one for meat, so sometimes a board might sit for days between uses. I know the old saying of "Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a...

    G Clamps

The cheap Irwin ones are fine for light use (I have a dozen or two), but if you want the sort of pressure a g-clamp provides you need the sturdier ones. Lightweight v medium duty

    Soldering broken bandsaw blades

Our big bandsaw at work (which is so old it has settings for cutting asbestos and ivory) has a 'bolted-on' blade welding & grinding gizmo. Similar to this

Sliding mitre saw - big or small?

I had one of the big Metabo sliding ones. In a single garage workshop it just took up too much space for the amount of use it got, so I got rid of it.

    ***** question of the day....

My shed (single car garage) is fed by an extension lead as well - and I use a simple fan heater, about the size of a shoebox. It warms up enough in about an hour to be able to work in there. Edit - just read you don't plan on being in there very long - sorry, dis-regard :)

    Dowel sizes

I stepped down through the sizes, starting with a hole that just took the corners off square stock, until I reached the desired size. Didn't need to use excessive pressure - most times it's only removing 0.5 or 1mm per pass. I made a few plates and sold them to some forum members (not this...

    Found Dowelmax Jig

Thanks Roy. I looked there - but there's £40 delivery plus whatever UK customs and/or mail charges go on top. Too pricey :(
