    Affordable vs Pride

One of my customers asked me to fit some wardrobes in a couple of bedrooms, the wardrobes had been supplied by some expensive bespoke firm who wanted £3k on top of the price of the wardrobes for fitting, he got them to do supply only and I fitted them for a lot less. He told me how there would...

    Affordable vs Pride

I do think built ins must be a very competitive area as anyone with a track saw is willing to have a go these days, you don't even need a workshop which saves a lot on overheads! Sometimes I think it would be good to specialise in one area of joinery like for example built ins so you can get...

    Table Saw Safety

When the 10 second braking rule came in we had electric brakes fitted to a few of our machines, it wasn't cheap and they didn't all work that well. We had one fitted to the Wadkin BRA cross cut, that worked well and made sense as it normally kept spinning nearly all day after you turned it off...

    Concealed hinge minefield

You won't go far wrong with the hinges you've linked to, 110 degree with soft close is pretty much the standard. I personally use these mounting plates, don't know why but I just prefer them https://www.trade-hinges.co.uk/diecast-mounting-plate-0mm-233-p.asp And I also buy my hinges from...

    Affordable vs Pride

From speaking to other tradesmen I get the impression things are slowing down a bit around here. There is nothing wrong with buying in things like ready made drawer boxes, if you source some decent ones it doesn't mean a drop in quality, somewhere that is set up for making just drawer boxes all...

    Small HVLP extractors (Axminster AW37E / Charnwood W685 / Clarke CDE35B / Rexon DE-1000A)

I think the Clarke style with the bag will be better for your ears but worse for your lungs.

Hanging some doors today, don't know if it was luck or good judgement by someone (not me) but this one literally missed the sloping ceiling by 2mm  Anyone who has done similar knows how tricky jobs like this can be, very easy to take a chunk out of the ceiling when lifting the door in and...

Fitting latch in door mid rail?

Thanks for the input chaps, at least nobody has chimed in and said their doors fell apart after they drilled a latch hole in the mid rail which is good. Customer has decided to put their faith in me and go with latches in the centre of mid rail, think we will be going for 4" latches as the...

Fitting latch in door mid rail?

@baldkev yes the doors are chipboard with really gnarly grained lippings

Fitting latch in door mid rail?

I'm fitting a few 4 panel Oak (veneered chipboard) doors for a customer. They ideally want to have knobs on them which means drilling the latch in the mid rail joint but they are concerned because as always the installation instructions say this is a no as it will weaken the joint. I have done...

Cabinet Hinges, inset for 25mm thick door

And these are the inset thick door hinges I would normally use https://www.trade-hinges.co.uk/soft-close-thick-door-hinge-inset-572-p.asp with these mounting plates https://www.trade-hinges.co.uk/diecast-mounting-plate-0mm-233-p.asp

    Hardpoint saws vs resharpenable

I haven't sharpened a saw for years, I generally only use a handsaw for rough cutting stuff to length. I use the Bahco Ergo system where you buy the handle then just use disposable blades which are available in many different sizes and TPI etc. The handle feels great in the hand compared to...

Woodworker's Insurance, who do you recommend?

I'm a sole trader and have used AXA for a few years, never made a claim so don't know if they are any good or not. Workshop in the garage, not sure what the insurers will think of that...........

Cabinet Hinges, inset for 25mm thick door

I normally get my hinges from here, Blum hinges are nice but you will find cheaper options if that's what you want. https://www.trade-hinges.co.uk/thick-door-hinges---inset-100-p.asp

Didn't know this tool even existed!

Festool made one but think it's now discontinued, Mafell still do one for about £3,500+

    Bahco square

I used to wonder why people raved about the Bahco combi squares as I had one and it didn't last long. On my original one the little threaded bit that hooks into the groove on the rule was brass and just wore out, maybe I didn't loosen it enough before sliding the rule along. I have since...

running battery powered tools using mains dc adapter

I'm think DeWalt do a mains adapter for their flex volt saws etc, always wondered why other manufacturer's don't do the same.

Faux-Roubo bench build - quick question

Do you mean not gluing each of the 125x45 together? If you have a biscuit jointer you could put a few biscuits in, that should keep them in line. Instead of screws maybe you could drill some holes through each piece then slide some some threaded bar through the full width of the top and use...

Panelling and moulding a new room opening

Yes battens is the way to go, if you get them nice and straight it will make the rest of the job much easier.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I made a few doors that were too short a bit longer! Think I owe @baldkev a pint as he was the first to suggest a shadow gap, it worked really well on this style of door, especially with the vertical grooves continued through.
