    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

Frank Kelly RIP, the actor who played the old drunk in Father Ted. If this doesn’t make you laugh there is absolutely definitely something wrong with you! And it’s topical.

    Thread identification help please.

Not really a serious suggestion but it would work. Use a square of Oak with a hole in it that matches the bolt under the threads. If you wanted uniformity you could do it to them all. I’m presuming you have tried removing another nut or the handle and taking it to a good hardware shop? Ian

    Hand Tool Wall Cabinet

Hi Dynamite, reusing table tops was mentioned I have a solid Mahogany D end dining table that has to go- emigrating and as nobody wants them these days it’s free for collection, just over the river from you in Barton. Only problem is I am away now till Feb? If that isn’t of use there is a...

    Construction adhesive?

I think it must be dependant on what the studs are used for, just to fasten an interior surface to - just adhesive as discussed. If weights on shelves are intended then all the pulling force is from the top, the bottom will be trying to go towards the wall and so I would put one bolt right...

Measuring machine noise, effective soundproofing, etc.

Yes you’re right Jacob, previously in my single skin brick garage with 4” of rock wool insulation all round ( in between the 2 x 4’s) then plasterboard with plastic double glazed door and window. I got my son to use the 12” table saw and then the 12” Tersa cutter planer. I was outside and was...

    electric oven failure

Well that’s a bummer 3 days before the big day, suggest you go American with an oil drum full of oil over a camping ring ——outside!! Don’t forget to attach string to pull it out with. Fried Turkey is remarkably good btw. I was really really surprised. Edit, sorry that wasn’t helpful as I just...

Talk of new benches has got me wondering

Thanks Richard and Doug, that sort of confirms what I was thinking. The provisional plan is for a bench 30” from front to back, from what I’ve read any wider and it’s beyond reach, any thoughts? Doug, I know what you mean, I have been following a truly massive thread on Lumberjocks? I was quite...

    Felder Fire, Very Close Shave!

That really isn’t good enough, bad enough that the machine which was regularly, (and no doubt expensively) serviced should catch fire but then to potentially put you out of business like that is so poor! If it were me I would be severing dealing with them and finding a local electrical...

Very nice shape to that seat. You didn’t fancy bringing the legs through and wedging them?

Talk of new benches has got me wondering

Very true and a good point Jacob, only one of me lol. But also as Tom says there must be times when it’s handy, this workshop is going to be much more hand tool orientated and so I think I shall have the room to try a freestanding one this time. The light, now that’s a bit of a secret fo now...

Talk of new benches has got me wondering

So I’m resurrecting this thread, The question I should have asked and it didn’t was for all the people out there with a freestanding bench – in the middle of the room so you can walk/work all the way round it, how does that affect/improve your work? Do you nearly always work on one side? Do you...

Seeking advice on material & construction choices (ply & angle)

Well as nobody else has replied. My thoughts are. I think I would use timber instead of the angle, this allows you to screw though the ply into the wood - a much stronger solution. The middle cross brace (which is where most of the balls will hit) should go right across. The ply is going to act...

Workbench Electrics - How would this be achieved?

Unless I have misunderstood your question it is probably an extension lead which is plugged in when needed. He has probably replaced the end with a double socket. I usually find it best to take the lead up to the ceiling to prevent a tripping hazard, or it’s possible that it’s plugged into a...
