Seeking advice on material & construction choices (ply & angle)

Haha, almost forgotten this, on looking now I wonder if one sheet of ply in Landscape would do? After all I don’t suppose it needs to be 8’ High? Timber size for fastening yes you could use a treated fence post or CLS 2 x4 in old money. Ian

Storage under a awkward sized workbench?

Judging by what Sideways posted I can only think it’s down to the side to side movement on the individual arm as it extends, so check the tech info when buying the runners, as some must be more suited to wide drawers methinks. Ian

Ash vs Beech for a workbench

It probably depends which you can get your hands on at the right price, most of the Beech we get in the UK is European steamed (often German) which I used last time, 3” top, it didn’t move in the slightest and I was very happy with it indeed. This time I’m in America and as Beech isn’t available...

    My workshop

I know this thread is a few months old now, but it’s a very useful carefully thought out list, @ Mrs C I like the hung up tube bag for rags, much better than my old carrier bag that clutters up space. My addition to the list is a few lengths of 6”cardboard tube fastened together either in a...

Storage under a awkward sized workbench?

If you want to do it, it will work but not all that smoothly, as it’s a workbench for your own use ok but when you get the opportunity you will probably turn it into 2 narrower ones. That’s exactly what I used (with a thick front lip). It’s purely down to the distance between the runners...

Storage under a awkward sized workbench?

@Sideways said, Another option is to buy 100kg rated ball bearing drawer slides (£30 a pair) and make pull out shelves the size of your whole bench top. You could get most people's entire set of planes and chisels in one good drawer like that. Yes I have done that sort of thing, but I stopped...

    Liquid rubber roofing

Just been there with my workshop roof, it finally gave up the ghost all aver at once after 35 years, it’s quite a job removing the chippings, in the end I used a mattock to scrape them loose. Then the guy did his thing with a top quality hot felt again, it was what he recommended and it will...

    Building control (or not)

I knew a Surveyor years ago who told me that houses built in the 20’s were definitely not built to such a good standard as those built in the 1930’s. Trouble is this present fiasco has been going on for decades now.

Haha, they will never create a bot that will be able to get past Jacob on sharpening. I can picture the smoke and steam now!

Pull out storage under seat unit

A couple of thoughts, I do enjoy this sort of problem. Depending on the floor surface or the base of the cabinet, you could put two strips of carpet under the box, and something similar? Not sure what yet between the box/drawer and the sides, anything mechanical there would be noisy, this would...

    New member - moving US>UK

@Jameshow Hi James, just had a look, you could get a Jet for that but something a bit older and heavier would be about a thousand, it’s a different set up to here as I’m finding to my cost, there seems to be a lot of Far Eastern low end stuff and then there’s not a great deal in the semi...

    Building control (or not)

What a waste of time and materials, it says they will be reusing the rubble. Somebody was cutting corners! But what plug ugly houses to start with, really lacking any attractive features at all, soul destroying, looks like Soviet block housing. Reading the above it made me wonder if they could...

    Replacement thermostat for room heater

Sorry, no, but I would disconnect and try some fine abrasive paper between the contacts, might just get it going again for a while. Ian

    Wood working spaces to rent

I’m thinking it a little strange that we have two new members whose first post each is for and in defence of something I can’t find, Hull workshop space, and I only live 5miles away. Yes it would be good, it would be marvellous, but we all know what these things cost, particularly when pushed...

I’m sure you will have checked, but from me looking in America to set up a workshop I’m not convinced about things being cheaper there. Obviously European equipment is a lot more over there. But even Grizzly seems expensive to me. Welcome and I hope you enjoy your woodworking in the UK, which...
