    Setting up a plane

Well all I can suggest is start with the blade withdrawn and gradually advance it downwards a tiny bit at a time till it starts to cut, I’m talking about a 20th of a turn on the wheel at a time. I know it will take a while but without being there that’s all you can do really. You could scribble...

    Setting up a plane

Quote. "The plane will bit in to the wood and just stop dead. I can move the workbench before it will cut. This happens with any depth of cut." If that is really the case and even with the blade fully withdrawn it bites into the wood this must be a casting fault, in that the sole behind the...

    Oak veneer mdf doors

I have made a U section to cap the edges of the veneered MDF in the past, mitred at the corners. Do you have a pic of the damage? The capping would only cover about 10mil. Would it be possible to redesign the wardrobe with slightly smaller doors?

    Mold

@SammyQ is absolutely right, that stuff can really make you ill. Do you have black mould as well?

    New workshop soundproofing ideas

I was amazed at how little noise could be heard outside my brick garage workshop after putting 4” of loft type insulation and plasterboard all around the inside.

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Now that’s a machine! Will follow with interest, none of my work needs a machine like that but I am very envious! If they could do chip extraction like that back then why are we all lifting tables up I wonder? Are you going to put it on castors lol.

    Record vices

absolutely right, and a most unusual jaw face! Like the carved ends. The good thing about most Record and Yost vices is an inbuilt pinch, so all you need is a parallel face.

UK & Ireland TIMBER YARDS - PLEASE Add Your Favourites

Depends what you mean by slabs really, bark on both edges? Not exactly round the corner I’m afraid Sommerscales in Keelby North Lincolnshire, might be worth a call. Ian

Show us your Box Shutter latches.

I think you mean, catches to hold the concertinaed folded leaves back in the splay boxes when the window is able to be looked through? I’ve worked on only a few but can’t say that any had catches to do this with, the exposed leaf is just a friction fit against the edge of the box. But I must say...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Don’t suppose you know what you’re going to find doing a job like that Doug, turned out well though, I’m just guessing the client was young from looking at it. Ian

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Dowsing is easy and I’ve found water pipes with ease in the past, just keep walking across the pipe and mark the position, start at the house where you think it emerges to the outside and go from there. You could practice on the pipe you know about. All you need is 2 Bic pen plastic tubes and...

Nature of the game WARNING this post contains graphic images of a hand injury

@ deema Dropping on to cut a groove, is that the same as pushing the wood against the groover part way along? Seems so innocuous.

    My 12m2 workshop

You should be proud and very pleased with what you have done there. Most people just haven’t got the nuts stamina, and the capacity to even start that sort of project. Ian

    New DeWalt Table Saw Acquisition

If I remember correctly the saw that I fitted came with 2 riving knives, I think they referred to one as a splitter? One riving knife as in your pic above is just rounded at the top and the other was designed to have the crown guard on. I must say I was quite impressed with the thoughtful way...
