20mm Bench dogs and 20mm hole sizes??

Holdfasts, it’s all relative to the top thickness, a thick top will work better with a sloppy fit, it’s all to do with the holdfast touching opposite sides of the hole top and bottom. Will it work? Best way to find out is to mimic your bench top with an offcut and try it. Ian

    Bent panel

Shame Doug, but that did move a lot! The Tulip must have expanded along its length, yes I know it does but that’s still a lot, there was another post recently where it appeared to be the moisture from the glue that was the culprit, just wondering if it’s worth waiting a couple of days before...

    Gate construction lore ?

Difficult to see but it certainly looks as though the top one is notched in, I don’t think the angle matters too much, I quite like the way that one looks, and the braces should do the job of stopping the gate sagging which is the important thing. Had the brace gone to the edges of the gate it...

    Unusual Lathe.....

Isn’t this world wonderful the way things come around, Trevanion will no doubt be able to say what’s in it in a few days. Ian

    I think these are wonderful

Thanks for that FH, that’s a brill effect, and one I shall nick as I can use that in the Automata "pictures" that I’m developing- slowly! Will show them on here eventually. Thanks again. Ian

    Ground screws for shed builders

Well yes that’s true but these aren’t piles, they are piers and that’s why you excavate down to undisturbed soil, anyway they work.

    Ground screws for shed builders

Another way we came across the other day is to use cut off lengths of concrete fence post, with pored concrete around then bolt to the sides, in my opinion, yes to the method but not to bolting to the sides. Ian

    Ground screws for shed builders

You set the base frame of the workshop on top of concrete piers, if wanted you can bed a bolt into the setting concrete to fasten to. Piers can be done in all sorts of ways, the depth depends on finding some undisturbed soil ( below the frostline, but that’s not much of a problem in the UK) ...

    Spindle Moulders!

Thanks for this Deema I have a Sedgwick SM3, fairly old machine but it will see me out. Quite a revelation when I first got it as to what I could do on it, wonderful for grooving or rebating. I never lashed out on a powered drive and get along just fine. The cutters are held in place on two pins...

    Ground screws for shed builders

I looked into them once and decided that it was probably best left to a properly equipped "expert". In the end my son went for cut off lengths of soil pipe buried in the ground with concrete in them.

Any idea what wood school PE benches are made of?`

Yes it depends, it could be either of those two, I reckon Fir is most likely, but it will be good quality and clear of defects. Please let us know. Ian

Retirement workshop - which machines to buy?

Either Hammer or SCM Minimax, they both have a small nr26 and a slightly larger nr30. Personally I think the Minimax is better but they are both very well engineered. All of those machines have a 10” saw plus either a 10” or 12” cast iron planer and thicknesser underneath, plus a Spindle...

Sound and heat proofing garden studio

Second layer in, chipboard? Or do you mean OSB? I will let more knowledgeable people tell you about insulation. Fibreglass- loft type insulation is ok unless it gets wet! Then it’s useless. Ian

    Kitchen cupboard door replacement.

Yes and wardrobe doors as well, you may be lucky and just have one door like that, but sorry to say it’ll probably be followed by others, temporary stop gap might be to stick it down again with superglue? Anyone tried it?

    Need to escape/reset

I have had problems over the years, admittedly not quite as bad or as seemingly intractable. Twice I have ended 20 year relationships having to start my life on my own again, the first time with nothing and start again from scratch. So I understand completely your desire to "run away". I also...

Show us your Box Shutter latches.

Thanks for the pic, that shows a nice old set. The old catches must have been very slim to not interfere with the next shutter of each three. It’s a shame they don’t still exist, I would be interested to see them.

Show us your Box Shutter latches.

Thanks for the photos but unfortunately I’m having difficulty working out what’s what, any chance of a pic from just a bit further away to put it into context? Just asked my swimbo who knows all about old houses and fittings, she said the said the same as me that she hasn’t ever seen any catches...

    Louvre Roof System

Haha, must say I hadn’t thought about wind! Perhaps pull the cord to close it all up when you’ve finished with it.

    Saw stop ( USA )

Were we more malleable in those days? Maybe we weren’t so **** sure of ourselves, is it computers and media? so that when the time came to be taught how to use a T saw we listened and as far as I was concerned that was it. That was the way it will be and has been ever since - two push sticks...

    Mold

@cowtown_eric you have a wonderful saying from near you by Gump "stupid is as stupid does" and you certainly seem to have found some of the more stupid ones!
