Cheeky question about another ww site.

I went through all of it, took me about 3 weeks of nonstop reading and screenshotting photos, all filed away including all the Moxon vice and leg vice ones. It inspired me to design a leg vice with quick release mechanisms on both top and bottom, all will be revealed when I’ve built it and made...

Change of career - what too.

Sorry to hear that. As you say onwards and upwards. At a time like this I found that I developed a keen self preservation state of mind, Good advice here,. I found it was a revelation as to how much I could get done when I wasn’t married, I worked damn hard and restarted my life afresh.

How would you make a barn star?

If you were to draw a circle then without altering your (beam) compass mark off around the circumference it will give you all the points. Schoolboy geometry, eventually it comes in handy!! I live most of the time in Pennsylvania and know those stars well, often on Amish Barns, they’re the ones...

Potential sites for new mega-solar farms

Also the cable cars in San Francisco still run on an electric powered moving cable running under the street. But it’s very old now and all modern systems use overhead electric cables. Ian

Change of career - what too.

So sorry to hear you are facing all this, a Divorce is bad enough on it’s own. In fact a Divorce is so life changing that are you sure you’re marriage isn’t fixable? I look back at a terrible marriage that produced 2 wonderful children and I know that I should have tried counselling. Re-the job...

Cheeky question about another ww site.

Thanks for that, so I wonder why or what’s wrong? Strange, I haven’t used it very much since they changed to a new format, I did find a HUGE brilliant thread on bench builds which I found to be very useful, but that predated the change I think. Ian

How to join Decking Board at 135°

This is a good idea, but suggest 3 or 4 fingers. Also whatever you do will end up the same as the raised beds you are replacing ie rotten, especially relatively thin wood like decking, also nailing it together is a none starter! I would suggest you build it using plastic decking. Using timber...

Cheeky question about another ww site.

Hi, I know it’s cheeky but I don’t know where else to go to find the answer, I am also on Lumberjocks, mainly a site for Americans. For last few days I can get on the site but can’t write anything and a couple of the buttons at the top don’t work. I’ve tried logging out and back in again...

Hot water low pressure effect on temperature.

Take this with a pinch of salt as I don’t know a great deal about central heating boilers, but reading up on an error code this morning it’s possible that to prevent the boiler overheating due to not enough water going through it and being heated that the boiler has cut back on heating the water...

Build a bed in home made workshop...

Yes I have seen his cabin build too. What surprised me was that when he cut 1/2” off the end of that post he let it drop to the floor instead of chucking it on the fire behind him. He’s right about sheep’s wool though, our duvets are wool- super toasty.

Cutting dog holes in laminate? Melamine / laminate workbench top

Yes I agree about the varnish I used water based poly varnish on my gluing up benches any blobs just ping off in a very satisfying way.

Shelving out an Inbuilt Wardrobe - Help a Novice

Not an easy thing to get right without the right equipment plus a lot of experience. So I would suggest two things that might help. Firstly I think it might be best painted, as you could fill in any splintering etc. Plus you could use an Aluminium section to slot/slide the shelves into. You may...

    Workbench Build

Brill, looks like it’s all going to work out! I can imagine the trepidation cutting that hole, apart from a hole saw which probably wouldn’t have worked very well at all, I think that was about the best way you could have done it. I look forward to seeing how you will fix the big washer thing...

Advice about best tool to use for project

Or maybe even better use a conecut similar but no steps, yes it would be tapered from both sides but as the material is thin not so bad, also a probably wouldn’t splinter the Beech. Ian

How long to acclimatise tulip wood window board

More likely scenario is the board cupping from moisture from the plaster and or brickwork. If hey are bone dry then I would leave the boards in the rooms for a couple of weeks. A lot also depends on how far from quartersawn the boards are. I have seen the underside of cills painted before now to...

    Hello & Workbench Idea

As @Sideways said better legs/bracing would be needed for the lateral forces from planing. From a personal perspective a metal bench has one main drawback and that is the noise from vibration or wherever it comes from. Yes I know it’s petty but the sounds from the metal would drive me nuts...
