    Solid Surfacing

This article is referring to Quartz type material (man made stone) and has been well publicised within the industry for quite some time now. I believe it has been banned in Australia and the concerns have spread from there. It does not however, refer to "Solid Surface" type material, which is a...

    Cutting Maple....Blunt Blade?

Sorted! A freshly sharpened mitre saw blade and it cuts fine now. Thanks for the advice everyone...👍 Edit. In case anyone was wondering what I used to sharpen the saw blade with, here is a picture of what I used. It's not a top quality tool by any means, as it takes longer to set it up...

    Cutting Maple....Blunt Blade?

When I cut the mitres on my Kapex, I did use the clamp to hold the maple in place but it still left a burnt cut. I've freshly sharpened a blade today at home, so will try it in the Kapex tomorrow ......🤞

    Cutting Maple....Blunt Blade?

I've been asked to make a small gift for someone and have been requested to make it out of 2 different offcuts of wood that I've got "spare"....😁 The 2 woods are Spalted English Oak with a minimal amount of spalting and a section of a reclaimed Maple kitchen worktop. As part of the gift, I...

    Trend MFT jig

I work with a lot of sheet material of various types & thickness and the rule of thumb that I always adhere to is,.... When working with ANY sheet material, ALWAYS assume any factory edge is rough and not to be trusted as straight or square.

Routing for an Inset induction hob

Due to the description of your kitchen layout and the weight of your worktops, just apply a couple of beads of silicone around the front & rear rails up inside the base units, it will be fine. Solid Surface does have a degree of flexibility, but I would suggest you carry/ move any worktop...

Routing for an Inset induction hob

With a good quality router & router cutter, an accurate straight edge to act as a guide for your router, good dust extraction wherever possible, a decent quality random orbital sander with the correct abrasives & pads, and a firm & steady grip on your router, you should be fine.👍 Make sure you...

Routing for an Inset induction hob

@mal165 If the worktop is Minerva, I hope you've got good dust extraction on your router coz it's real messy without it...😯 When routing out a Hob cutout in this type of material, the best way for you to cut an accurate aperture & rebate would be just to use 4 strips of MDF and hot melt glue...

    sand blasting

Please forgive my ignorance Fergie, I know what CFM is......but what is FAD....? Edit. I just looked it up on Google....Free Air Delivery......Every day is a school day!😁 I've been thinking about getting a media blasting cabinet and I have 3 different sized compressors, but I want to be certain...

    Nickel Plating

    Which wood is this....?

Thanks everyone 👍 I'm going to proceed on the basis that it is Iroko and find some sort of use for it. Cheers, Tim.

Second, third or more lease of life.

I find it hugely satisfying to bring tools/ machinery/ appliances back from the brink, so to speak. SWMBO usually just says " I'll just order another one"...and I always say " Not until I've taken it apart and looked it over you wont..." When I see old wood in a skip, I turn into Stig of the...

    Which wood is this....?

Regarding smell,...the redder wood has a slightly pepper/ spice aroma, but I cant decern any particular smell from the lighter brown timber. On closer inspection, the lighter brown wood appears to have a few flecks of White " salts" in the grain? (Its not paint..!)

    Which wood is this....?

I cant say it smelled of anything, to be honest...! I know the redder timber is a smaller section of wood, but it feels far lighter and less dense than yesterday's rescue..😁

    Which wood is this....?

Here are a couple of photos showing both freshly cross cut ends and freshly planed faces.... The redder timber is what I had always assumed was Sapele......I also rescued it from a skip more than 10 years ago and I have loads of it....👍

    Which wood is this....?

It definitely has more weight to it compared to the "redder" wood. I'll make a fresh cross cut on both woods tomorrow and show the end grain of each side by side.

    Which wood is this....?

This is what I thought was Sapele next to a bit of the skip rescued wood this morning.....Both were freshly wiped with DNA....

    Which wood is this....?

I'll put a section of what I "thought" was Sapele next to this stuff.....
  19. Distinterior

    Which wood is this....?

Really..? I have a quite a bit of what I thought was Sapele and it is a lot "redder" than this threshold.......Perhaps what I thought was Sapele, ....isn't??
