    Wadkin BOA planer head upgrade

I am looking at upgrading my planer from a Startright 12 inch and would ideally like a 12 inch with tersa or spiral cutter head. There was an article on here where somebody was upgrading the standard head on a BOA to a spiral one but cant find it. Has anybody done this and what were the costs...

No longer remotely Shaker(ish) dining table

If you look at the base of many old tripod leg tables, you will see that the joint has failed at some time. These have often been repaired and then been reinforced with a circular plate sometimes with an extended strap down the underside of the leg. The problem is that the metal can actually...

    Sound insulation for metal roof?

Inner sheet refers to a standard twin skin built up insulated system which is not what you have. Just stuffing rockwool between the rafters will give you a fairly poor result because much of teh noise will transmit through the rafters. Also ainy water vapour in teh air will permeate through the...

    Sound insulation for metal roof?

dBA and average figures can be very misleading. It is much better if you have an actual idea of the frequencies you are trying to to stop. Lighter weight constructions can work well for higher frequencies ( high pitch router) but lower pitches probably more like a planer then mass is best...

    Sound insulation for metal roof?

There are three main approaches to reducing sound transmission. Increased mass, Increase stiffness . Increase separation by having 2 skins A single skin metal roof construction gives about 24db airborne sound reduction. . Insulation on the underside will leave the rafters acting a localised...

    gloves?

I hate wearing gloves due to the loss of feeling but sometimes use tham when moving rough sawn timber and ply. My question is why do people wear them. If its an allergy then the thin latex/nitrile gloves are fine. If its protection then sometimes they lull people into a false sense of security...

    hand cut mitred box splines?

Splines can be cut on a router table before the mitre is assembled so they are not visible when the mitre is assembled but strengthen the mitre (a bit like a secret dovetail).. Al that is needed is a decent fence and preferably a second fence. Cut the mitres as normal. Set up a 4mm cutter...

Woodwork hand tool demo. chisel question

Sharpening chisels/plane blade etc free hand, maintaining a constant accurate angle is not a simply acquired skill. The Value of tools

I am far more attached to my hand tools than any of my machinery or portable power tools. My tools are a mix of second hand and new and generally the more work I have put into fettling/repairing etc the more attached i am. When buying hand tools I am generally buying lifetime tools but also try...

    Octogon jewellery box

I bought some really nice curly walnut veneer at Harrogate which was too small for any larger projects. The box is 400mm X 200mm X 80mm The box is made from 8 oak octogons which are slotted on 2 faces to join with a spline to the veneered side panels. The central divider is removable and fits...

A Different Kind of Sharpening Thread

When you sharpen hand tools you are aiming to get the bevel and the back meeting at a perfect angle, however the sharper the tool, the more fragile the cutting edge produced. I suspect for planer and moulding knives any benefit from that initial "super sharpness" will be lost in the first few...
