Wooden curtain poles with a home made dowel-making jig.

hi Mike. If you look at the ashem type rounders then the taper is much longer so the wood is supported all the length of the cut. You could try extending the tool and putting a lead in hole before your 45 degree chanfer ( just anothe piece of wood with a hole in it that the octagon just fits...

    Workbench Advice

The vice on a "normal" right handed bench is usually inset from the end by at least 6 inches. If you want to cross cut a piece, I would do this with a bench hook and a crosscut/tennon saw. Planing you need to stand sideways on to the bench and plane left to right. A long piece may need some...

Coloured epoxy resin inlaid on veneerd birch ply details.

6 X 6 stained black ash lines will bend much more easily and will be lack all the way through as well as much cheaper than ebony Ian

Coloured epoxy resin inlaid on veneerd birch ply details.

I think you should be able to inlay so that you only need to scrape less than 1mm so that is how deep you need the stain to penetrate. What type of wood and stain you use will dictate how much penetration you get. What colour are you looking at ? Ian

Coloured epoxy resin inlaid on veneerd birch ply details.

Why do you have to use epoxy for the line. Could you use a 6mm square strip of dyed wood which is glued into the groove. This can then be levelled with a very finely set hand plane and cabinet scraper. Once epoxy is set it will be much harder than the surrounding ply so more difficult to level...

    Motor start up currents

Thanks for the comments. I will be replacing my fuse board later this year so will try and get main incoming fuse uprated at the same time. Cartidge/wire type fuses are generally much less sensitive than MCBs which will be fitted. Understand the time at amps as basically for a wire fuse it has...

    Motor start up currents

I only have 240V single phase supply into my workshop. I currently run a 3HP 600mm bandsaw and 3HP 12 inch panel saw using VFD and have no problems I am just looking at a Sedgewick single phase MB planer which has a 4 HP motor. Running current is no problem however start up is quoted at up to...

    Inverter wiring question

The mircro switches can be wired into the 10-12v control side of the Inverter. I was told regarding emergency stopping not to cut the 240V supply but to do it through the control. The programme in your vfd should also be able to alter the ramp up/down speed on normal start stop. The faster you...

Homemade router table and fence help

For my first router table my fence was simply held with clamps. Pivoting the fence at one end means that assuming your router bit is mid point on the fence, you only get half the movement at the cutting point as you do at the end so it makes it easier to make small adjustments. A fence doesnt...

    Blockboard vs plywood

Andy it is definitely blockboard, similar to Mike jordans picture. Available from Potters in Nantwich. Dont want to use mdf as it is very water sensitive My gut feeling is to go with the more expensive birch core ply as the cost doesnt seem that much after you factor in £1200 for worktops and...

    Blockboard vs plywood

I am just starting a full kitchen refit using oak veneered board which will be fully lipped. Normally I would use double sided veneered ply but have been offered 3 options veneered birch which is definitely the best but 50% more than anything else veneered malayan ply. appears Ok but some voids...

    Screws in oak

I always use brass, but if using brass make sure you pilot drill holes and preferably use a steel screw first to cut a thread and then replace with the brass. Brass screws can sometimes shear very easily

    Planing hardwoods

I think you need to be more specific with what you mean by "difficult" In general, as species get harder then the requirements for correct plane set up, a sharp blade and technique become more critical. If your problem is more to do with varied grain/interlocked grain then some timbers are more...

    U-value of a timber window

Refer to Approved document L2B or L1B if it is a dwelling See attached link section 4.24 https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... dments.pdf The problem is that teh Approved Documents are technically guidance documents so they are open to interpretation. Ian

    Wadkin BOA planer head upgrade

Thanks Trevanion. The link appears broken but my memory (whats left of it) is that the project was never finished. I would prefer the tersa system but the noise factor is the main interest in spiral Tersa heads are available at around £1300 all in, so combined with a basic machine works out at...
