    Kitchen dresser

I used the saw method to create 100ft of moulded laminates when I made a curved drinks cabinet with curved fluted sides. I dont like leaving a blade unguarded so I put a wooden guard over the blade so the wood being moulded was in a tunnel For handplanes, I think David Charlesworth did an...

    Sorby Ring gouge

The ring tool works Ok but if you get a catch then it really catches. The more recent variants like the crown tool have a chip limiter so easier to use. I would save your money and but a carbide tipped tool like the ones from Simon Hope or Crown

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

I thought the axminster machine was a very good machine but the Hammer was only 20%more and seemed much more substantial. It is 50Kg heavier and you could see that in the castings etc. I also thought a lot of the axi fittings were underengineered. My preference is always to buy towards the top...

    Wadkin AGS 10" vs 12"

My old AGS 10 took a 12 inch blade but wouldnt lower fully below the table. You had to fit a 10" blade for that Ian

    Help with a spokeshave please

I have never liked the metal spokeshaves. I find the old wooden ones much better. I bought 2 Ron Hock blades last year and made my own one flat and one curved Ian

    Table saw mitre guide

I had problems getting a mitre fence to fit the sliding table on my casadei panel saw. In the end I machined the slot wider to take 19mm track fittings. I used a router and cleaner up with files but I was only taking about 2mm

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

I bought a 100/125 reducer for £5 from Axminster but it is slightly too big for the Hammer outlet so I have packer it with a rubber gasket. I didnt think my extractor would be good enough but so far it has been excellent. My extractor is right behind the planer and the duct run is only 2 metres

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

I think they were offering some very good deals just at the start of lockdown when everything ground to a halt for a couple of weeks. I did a bit of haggling and got a bit more off. I think all machine prices have gone back to normal or even up now Ian

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

I will be making my own table extensions with a tufnol surface. Felder/Hammer ones are way too expensive for me

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

I had my previous 12 inch planer thicknesser for at least 15 years and it has served me really well. I had spent the last 10 years thinking about buying a felder or similar replacement but always baulked at the price. With some of the deals around at the start of lockdown I decided to go for...

    Which insulation to use

Most manufacturers have switched from PU to PIR foams due to the much better fire performance of PIR.

    Cut Resistant Gloves

I work with sheet steel and steel cladding and company policy is to wear cat 5 cut resistant gloves at all times. But cut resistant cuts will not stop a slicing cut. The most important t6hing is to learn how to hold the work so if it does slip it doesnt cut you. tDressing up in ppe like...

Using benchtop machines without dust extraction kit

My last planer thicknesser was a Statrite 310 with a chip chute for thicknessing only. Never had extraction for surfacing but always had the thickness table down to allow chips to drop away from the cutter block. When thicknessing the chute was very good for allowing the chips to blow out ( a...

WIP - A pair of computer monitor stands - sculpted Walnut legs and Yew top

Really nice design and finish. A pity so much of the wonderful grain patterns in the stand are obscured by the foot of the monitor

    A handsaw for plywood only

I often use a larger tennon saw for cutting ply . 12 tpi cross cut angled so the back doesnt catch so as well as tpi I think the shallower the angle and so the greater apparent thickness (more teeth in the cut) are important Ian
