    Router Table

I have the Jessem with AUK system from Peter Sefton in a home made table. Really nice piece of kit, My only comments are The table is only as accurate as the fence so you need to make or buy a micro adjustable fence. The position of the raise lower directly in front of the cutter means that you...

Help: Which Combination machine for a beginner?

Before you buy a combination machine think about what things you make and which functions you need Do you relly need a spindle moulder function? If you are mainly making using manmade boards then the planer thicknesser function is less relevent. Sheet material can often be easier to cut to size...

    Thoughts on making a wardrobe

It depends upon how you want the finished wardrobe to look. For the top if you want to use solid will this sit within a frame in which case you must allow for movement or will it sit on top of a frame in which case you can fit with slotted screws or buttons etc. Alternatively you could use...

    Handles and offcuts

I generally prefer wooden handles and enjoy the designing and making as part of the project I am just getting to the end of a large ash and walnut wardrobe and wanted 8 matching handles in walnut to set off against the paler ash I went for 90mm long by 26mm deep Fist stage was to calculate the...

How do I cut a rebate following a curved edge on a router table?

If the circle is a reasonable size you could make a circle cutting attachment to fit onto the fence bars of your router. or a false base and jig. If you spend a bit of time you have a jig that you can use for all circle diameters. See a couple of images on attached...

Edge joint, one inch birch ply?

The strength required from the joint will depend upon how you plan to use the horses. If using like a heavy duty saw horse then Custards design has a proven track record. You have said they are light duty and a max load of 50kg but it depends on how that load is applied and how it is cycled as...

Butt hinges size for 18mm face frame and door

Yes that will work but it means that teh hinge recess will be visible on both sides. Personally I like the hinge to be narrower than the door thickness but not always possible. Simonswerk hinges are good quality. If cost is an issue, have a look at the screwfix brass butt hinges which are about...

Help sizing wooden rounds and hollows

My feelings based on measurements and condition is that the hollow is the correct dimensions. i have sharpened this and it is now producing a very nice finish and profile. I will sharpen the round and and see what it produces and then adjust if required

Help sizing wooden rounds and hollows

That is exactly what I think is the best way forward. Understand that there is some variation between makers. between different planes when new and the effects of general wear and tear. I think that a no16 hollow /round should be 1 1/4 inches cutter with and have a radius of 1 1/4 inches (6 X...

Help sizing wooden rounds and hollows

At least you will be able to get the results to match a lot easier than if the mismatch was the other way round, just a couple of extra strokes at more acute angles I dont see how you can change the angle as the sole profile must follow the frofile you are cutting in the piece being profiled

Help sizing wooden rounds and hollows

I have a job which has some fluting so decided to buy a matching pair of wooden rounds/hollows. They are the same maker and both are stamped as no16.. Bothe blades are 1 1/4 inch wide which corresponds to a No 16 I expected the sole profiles to be an exact fit, however the round is...

planer or thicknesser first or planer thicknesser?

the Startright SD310 has rubber rollers. The metal serrated drive roller doesnt limit the minimum thickness what it does it limit the minimum amount you have to take off on a pass to remove the teeth marks. This will also depend upon the roller pressure but is somewhere in the region of 0.5 to...

Cedar strip canoe - moving swiftly on

Great project. Something I have always wanted to do. I made racing canoe paddles for a couple of years. Have you sorted out what resin/cloth you are using. I would recommend epoxy rather than the cheaper polyester or vinylestester resins as epoxy seems to bond much better to the wood but...

    Chest of Drawers

Well I am an engineer. Seriously its is very quick to do all the mortices once the frames are made and before everything is glued up. It also allows the drawers to be fitted with the drawer stops loose. I am confident my stops wont fall off.😊 The real point though is about planning ahead and...

    Chest of Drawers

One of the other things to plan ahead for is drawer (and door) stops. Usual approach is to have a small block attached to the dividing rails which the drawer pushes up against. These can be simply glued on but a better approach is to have them morticed in. Very difficult to do once teh cabinet...

    How much?

I went to Trentham Craft fair on Thursday which had some really top makers. Robert Ingham was their and I was quite shocked at how low his prices were in comparison with other makers which were simply nowhere near. I know his work is a bit of marmite but for someone of his skill and reputation...

Mahogany and Oak box with chessboard style inlay lid - finished in OSMO

Nice box design great fit on the joints and finish. Just a concern about allowing for wood movement between the lid panel and edging which could cause mitres to open up . Best to leave the panel floating or use veneer on a stable substrate like ply or mdf if gluing all round
