Post a photo of the last thing you made

Cheval mirror in walnut and beech inlay. The problem photographing mirrors is not to get yourself or the mess behind you in the photo. Failed on 1 count. The mirror frame is made with mitred corners, strengthened with internal loose splines. The 4mm inlay was fitted before any of the joints or...

    How To Edge Joint

Putting 2 boards back to back and planing them together can work but if you have a cambered blade you will get a slight misalignment. Generally works Ok for thin boards but not for thicker ones Ian

    Record vice slipping.

Looking at the pictures you have posted 2 things stand out In the first picture the quick release lever is 180 degrees our. It needs to be rotated so it is in the same position as the vice shown in Hattori Hanzo's photo. The spring should be pushing threaded piece into engagement When the vice...

Setup for a beginner - really long shopping list

Woodworking is a bit of a journey and what you buy depends on what you want (or think you want) to make, how much time you want to commit and how much money you want to spend. At the start of this process I dont think anybody really knows what they are setting up for and what they will really...

What blade sits on your table saw on a daily basis?

I always try and change the blade to suite what I am cutting. I use a Casadei panel saw with 300mm blade with anything between24T and 96TCG Range of blades, OMAS, CMT. Freud and unknown. OMAS seems to be the best Sharp and less teeth is always safer than too few. Find a good saw doctor...

    **** Ups

I think your post demonstrates 2 things However good you are/get you will still make mistakes As you get better you also get better at repairing or hiding the mistakes you have made. The trouble is that although nobody else can see them you still know they are there. How can you live with...

    Glazing with Butyl

Butyl mastic tape is very temperature sensitive. If its cold there is no way you will get adequate compression on a wide flat bead. Keep it somewhere warm in the winter. Hodgesons also do round beads which are easier to compress but may not fill the gap fully leaving a water trap

    DIY level Flat top blade

I spoke with the guy who sharpens my blades/cutters today (Priestner Saw). They will regrind a an ATB to flat top grind at no extra cost. Works out at £10 for a 300mm 72T blade. This might work out a lot cheaper, repurposing an old blade for this as it wont see a lot of wear. Ian

    Wet Wheel Sharpening Systems.

I think it depends upon which Tormek wheel you have. The faster cutting water stone ones are OK but I think the natural stone can cause problems

    Cutting Steel with Circular Saw

I use a makita saw with metal cutting blade for cutting profiled metal sheeting in work but that is up to about 1mm max. It cuts really nicely and very accurate but spits metal particles everywhere (face shield an absolute must). For cutting box section etc I would use a cut off saw with a metal...

Side rebate Plane - old ones any good?

A side rebate plane is the only tool that will fit into a narrow groove and can be used to widen it slightly to get a really good snug fit for the of shelves etc. A standard rebate plane or a no 78 will not do this job

Side rebate Plane - old ones any good?

I have a very old Preston one which has the fine depth adjuster screws. If you get one with a removeable front you can work right into stopped corners. You do need to be very accurate when you sharpen to maintain the correct angle. Fantastic little tool for what you want

    This bench is seriously impressive

Virtually everybody I know would like a bigger workshop. The biggest problem is not allocating space for main machines, it is all the other bits and pieces we collect so any different takes on storage systems are always interesting. Like cabinet man, I couldnt use this type of bench as it has no...

    How to assemble this

You could use a combination of dominoes for the main horizontal shelves and housings for the verticals. That way you could glue up in stages. Main carcase and shelves first and then slide the dividers into the housings. Housings cut with a router either straight through or stopped. I find less...

    Hardwood buying advice.

2 x 2 X 10m is 0.91cuft. On clean sawn square edge boards I would expect to pay £110 inc vat per cuft and allow about 20% wastage (less if you can use short lengths, more is needing longer lengths) so material cost in your quote is around £120 inc vat 2 inch rough saw wont finish much thicker...

    Struggling

Most axminster lathes are 1inch by 8 tpi thread so the chuck will fit The chuck will be a standard RH thread so turn over the top towards you to loosen. I dont know whether the lathe has a spindle locking pin or you need a tommy bar or spanner to hold teh headstock while you unscrew the chuck...

how to build a shooting board and what plane to use?

Given that Badger 99 has a limited budget and is just starting out to make a small number of frames I would go down the shooting board route. Will probably cost less than £5. has a lot more uses than just trimming mitres and you will improve hand skills doing it and using it. Many very high...

Shed build with metal profile sheets

Good morning Arnold. The day job is designing and testing metal cladding systems for Tata Steel albeit on slightly larger sheds. There are a number if issues around using a single skin material. Steel is a very good conductor of heat and any moisture in teh air humidity is likely to condense out...

Festool Domino DF500 what size cutter?

D500 dominos come in 4, 5, 6 . 8 and 10mm thickness so yes you will need the right size cutter. May be worth buying a set as it does work out cheaper. Adjuster on the side of the machine sets the depth so the combined plunge should add up to 50mm. Occasionally I have cut dominos to length but a...
