    Wedding goblets completed

Hi Pete, By you have been busy and what a lovely job you've made of them both. I can see what you mean about the similarity of each pair but at the end of the day they are hand made not CNC made and must therefore be open to some artistic licence! I must agree I do not like trying to make...

    Something Inspirational

Hi Tom, I think you might be right about the percentage of likes and dislikes. I have just studied some of the detail in certain pieces and I think my favorite must be minds eye from the furniture etc collection. Very interesting though, Regards Ian

    can it get any worse!!!

Hi Steve, This is all part of the learning curve. It could be worse you might have just been on the last cut when the job flew out the chuck. I had just cleaned the foot up on a bowl then dropped the darn thing on the lathe bed and knocked a chunk off the edge. That life! Best regards, Ian

    Mushrooms

Hi Cris, What a fine crop of mushrooms and a pleasing way to produce them on the bark. very nice job! When I first started turning I produced loads of mushrooms with integral base but as we all seem to prefer different shapes mine tend to be longer and one of my friends refers to them as adult...

    Bench Grinder advice

Hi Simon, If you take the stone shield of the machine it reveals the face of the white wide stone which is only full width for the outer inch and a half. The problem area is the the inside face of the recessed stone. Fix the machine down to a board and build up timber at the side of the stone...

    Bench Grinder advice

Hi All, Just a note on the Record Power 8 inch I had the out of balance problem with the white stone and if you turn it by hand and observe the side of the wheel the outside is running true but the recessed edge runs way out. Mine had a distinct egg so considering the amount to be removed...

    Moisture meter *opinion*

HI Alie, I think the price is way too high, shop around and you can pick a reasonable one up with a bar graph read out for less than £20 which will be accurate enough for a guide. Regards, Ian

Hi Johnny, What a lovely colour that mahogany has and a very nice shape and style. I like the rings in the top as they give just enough detail to the piece. Very nice, well done, Regards, Ian

    Holiday snaps

Hi Mrs S, Now that log looks to have a family of wood worm or termites in residence and a fine colony at that. By I bet they'd go pop in the microwave!! It's a terrible thing to have hankerings over wood piles, last year I was dropping one of my daughters off at a new boyfriends house when I...

    todays messings

Hi Steve, I like the pine bowl with a lovely grain pattern and a fine crop of mushrooms too!! I can see the lathe has been receiving a bit of "running in". Nice one!! Regards, Ian

    Spiraling out of control

Hi Tom, First of all what speed did you run the lathe at? Should not be above 400/500 rpm. Set the tool rest high enough so that the cutting wheel teeth start to make contact just below centre line and raise up into the rotating timber and you should start off as with the beach. Every time you...

    A Lamp

Hi Tom, That a fine curvy figure you got there and I like the colour too! I wondered at first what the darker lines were in the second photo but now I have read the explanation of the lamination I can now understand. Very nice result, keep up the good work!! Regards, Ian
