    Vaccination

I don't profess to be an expert on the ins and outs of all this, but do know that we are relieved our 20 year old daughter who has Down's Syndrome is booked in this Friday morning for her *** - we got the call today. In my view, fair play to the efficiency of this rollout and full credit to the...

    Axminster SK114 chuck thread

Hi mini lathe - I'd say best to get spindle re-machined too, but contact Axminster if you want go down the direct machined chuck thread route at 2" - If you can try then try to speak to Mark (sorry can't remember his last name but he's been there years) who was head of engineering when I was...

Best 6" Random Orbital Sander or should I get a forced rotation (geared) Sander?

Don't use it every week (or sometimes for months), but my Metabo SXE450 is still going strong after all I've thrown at it after 15+ years use Useful to change the orbit from 3 to 6mm too - makes a difference. Never really used any of the others in anger so can't compare, but just my tuppence...

    Items out of stock

It's a bit of all seven in my view. We are pre-selling out before stock even comes in.. Covid mainly started it with factory shutdowns / less production early last year + then increased global demand / no catch up + less ships + messy UK ports + any stock already ordered on forecast was lower...

Big machine scams! - Gumtree Scotland

Yes, that is MWM's old showroom in Leicester. The framed pic on the wall is the old Wadkin factory - that now has pride of place in their new reception area.

    Axminster price increasing

Yes, those costs sound about right. Biggest challenge will be larger sized but lower value items - as the importer will pay more in relation to the products value due to the space it takes up. eg. Importing a container worth 35k has a bigger percentage hit than importing a container worth 100k...

    Bringing goods from the EU

Hi Noel - hope all is good with you and yours mate - very long time no speak/see I know. In fairness many of us know that this sort of extremism has always existed by people trying to capitalise on any issue to create further issues Not saying there are no issues, but jeez I wish people would...

    B&D urban myth?

Spennymoor Johnny - At one point I'm sure they were producing motors / injection moulding / castings etc. And they had 2,000 or so staff in the peak days.

    Interesting response from Screwfix

Hi Jelly, yes I should have maybe explained better. We fully risk assessed it. The entire pallet comes off the back of container - we have extra wide forks specifically for this as it's way too big/heavy for most standard fork trucks. Then to decant once it in the warehouse we use our electric...

    Interesting response from Screwfix

Heavy items likely already have systems in place not requiring a 2 man lift - this is how we do bandsaws (image drawn for another importer) - couldn't manual lift anyway even if we we had our weetabix Items 25kg - 50kg I reckon will be the ones affected as no more two man lift with each lifting...

    B&D urban myth?

I'm sure when i was with Elu / B&D they said 3 hrs too for B&D consumer early 90's. Don't have anything in writing to back this up, just remember that being a figure - and it made sense at the time. Industrial grade of course designed for far longer - they had B&D pro also at the time - they...

AXMINSTER CRAFT AC118CE CYCLONE DUST EXTRACTOR

Hi Mock - the bigger diameter the better - cyclones need airflow coming in to work at optimum performance and push the bits into the drum. Too small an air intake and they won't work as they should. Upgrade to 125mm if I were you mate. Cheers, Nick

    Interesting response from Screwfix

Hi Jelly - I suspect this relates more to them being able to pick and despatch items from their main distribution centre. They almost certainly arrive on massive container width pallets & then stored. Normally two people could easily take a machine up to 50kg off the pallet together & send to a...

are there any uk companies that maufactuer power tools

I'm way out of touch on powertools nowdays, but Spennymoor was a decent player back in the day for B&D. 14 million tools a year.. https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/13801065.black-decker-end-era-spennymoor-demolition-plan-comes-forward/

    Making scale model tools

They are brilliant Ian - nice one. Not the same level of craftsmanship as yours, but on a similar vein I think there's something very satisfying about making miniatures. Using my 3d printer I've designed the files from scratch on CAD as a learning curve / printed out and painted a few mini...

    JET JWBS-16X

Depends what you mean - they predominately use one TW factory for a lot of the machines that we sell (bandsaws / lathes / drum sanders) & Laguna own the Tooling / design rights. This factory only make for Laguna as far as I am aware so there is a huge tie up between them. Some other machines (T...

    JET JWBS-16X

No apologies needed at all Greg - there's loads of companies Far East all producing similar looking machines - key is in the QC checking and individual factory competence. Taiwan build is generally superior to China quality - OAV Taiwan are very highly regarded by the way and offer a vast range...

    Decisions decisions

Good luck as per request Mock - ps. we met once about 6 years ago - hope all is well too fella. Nick (I was Jet then - if you remember me when I visited your workshop? :) )

    JET JWBS-16X

Hi Greg, they don't, Harvey are a separate company completely & China based manufacture. The Jet JWBS16 was made by a Taiwan company called OAV Cheers, Nick
