    In the US they are known as Lag Bolt Handrail brackets, but that does not bring up any in the UK, but thanks for looking. May have to buy some long coach bolts, bend and weld my own, not something I want to do, but needs must.

    Run a Stanly knife blade down each side of the existing filler and it should then just pull out.

    The foam backing rods are there to ensure the expansion material is not as deep as it is wide, ideal width to depth ratio is about 4:1 to allow movement, expansion gaps in brickwork should at every 4.5M approximately, difference between Acrylic and Silicone is that you can paint Acrylic...

    You can see the guard here, it's just a rectangular piece of plastic with a curve on the top, I am sure someone with a 3D printer would be able to knock one up for you.
