    Confused about screws

I can't do better than point you to the wiki page - List of screw drives - Wikipedia Some here may be surprised at how many different drive recesses there are (have been!) The object of the change was to increase the 'out of vertical' potential which still retaining the anti-CamOut...

    Confused about screws

I'm definitely at the other end of whatever scale you are using to describe the strength of screws! I've just ordered some 3mmØ x 8mm C/Snk because I made an error and cut a 3mm hole instead of a 2.5mm and the 2.5mm screw would have broken through the timber I'm screwing into. These screws are...

    Who else thinks this?

I'm not sure Niki Lauda or Ayrton Senna would agree with your sentiment !

What is going on with wood prices right now

Then you don't understand the basic concept of commodity business. What you paid for stock has very little to do with what you need to sell it for - the 'cost of replacement' is the driving factor.

How to make this handle slot?

Tufnol was first produced in the late 1920's whereas Micarta goes back to at least 1910 invented by Leo Baekeland the creator of Bakelite.

Mach3 movement on CNC is driving me mad!

Thinking 'outside the box' - are you absolutely sure that the bit is really cutting to 'size' ? ie. You may have what is ostensibly a 1.5mm end mill but is is being held accurately and running true in the collet ? I use end mills/burrs as small as 0.6mm but regularly 1.0, 1.5 & 2mm and at...

    Electric vehicles

It's a shame that the Stanley brothers decided that the near death of their driver in 1907 in speed trials on Ormond Beach meant that they were not prepared to continue development. They had previously been winning nearly every race that came available such that steam cars were often banned from...

    Drawing software.

I regularly use SketchUp & CorelDRAW! and could never work with just one (say) 15.6" 'Laptop' screen. I suggest that you seriously think about a minimum 19" 5:4 ratio monitor (or two) but If you have to have a 'landscape' (16:9 ratio), at least a 22". The screen size is probably more important...

    Which wood pilot/countersink

Ah.. You are using more screws in a week than I've used in my lifetime I suspect  Of course if any manufacturer sees a benefit of stepping away from the 'Standard' because a particular style of screw needs a larger head due to driving recess (PZD3 / 2) then there will be a divergence.

    How is this fixed together?

I'm pleased you did, AES, - as soon as I saw you link 'Imperial' and 'BA' I reached for my keyboard 😆 The original specification was created in 1884 but only became BS 93 in 1903, so your 1900 ish was a good memory. I still use some BA threads - had to make some 10BA x 4mm Brass C/Sunk...

    Which wood pilot/countersink

That is undoubtedly true but as with any manufacturing process there has to be an ellement of 'tolerance' and with a 5mm screw that would mean that the head diameter could be anything between 8.6 and 9.8mm (Mach. Handbook 26th Ed. p1456) and still conform to the 'standard'. It doesn't mean that...

3" brass parliament / projection hinges?

You could well be searching in vain for 3" (75/76mm) Parliament Hinges because of the narrow knuckle. Consider 'Projection' hinges instead they have a full width knuckle but the leaves are as deep as 'Parliament' pattern.

    Office worktop build

My first thought was "He'll need at least a 'leg' at the left hand end" My second was "That is a prime candidate for a kitchen work top as the main 'desk' " The desk I'm working at currently is a 28mm thick worktop with a span of 1.9m fully supported at both ends and also has three...

    Bosch router woes

That is certainly possible - if you have a metal working facility, or access to someone who has. I have made sleeves for my ½" Router collets for 12mm, 10mm, 8mm, ¼", 6mm and 1/8". The 12mm was the easiest to split since it only need one cut and at 0.35mm thick could easily be done with a...

    Barley twist stems

Is it possible to change the size of the cable drum (on the Trend) ? I appreciate that may also need a different length of cable but could that be accommodated by the use of an idler?

    Long tap

I haven't seen one as small as M1.5 or M2 but you might find a 'Nut Tap' which would have a long and narrow shank. I doubt that it would be cheap though. As 'The Tiddles' has said 4xD is about as long as you'd get under normal conditions; and that would have a shank probably 4mm Ø. In extremis...

    Internal door price

Can't help on Howden's Pricing but I can point out that the B&Q Door you link to isn't 2'3" wide it's 2'6". B&Q do list 4 doors at 686mm wide which is as close as they are going to specify but it's a pain to filter their site down to that level, I had to filter to 6'6" height (1981mm) first...

    Etsy...how does it work?

The fact that you are a 'Sole Trader' is totally irrelevant as far as VAT is concerned. You could tell HMRC that you wish to register for VAT and you could then claim back the VAT you pay on materials - but, you would then have to charge, and account for, VAT on any sales you made. It...

Charnwood W880 Lathe - are theya good 'step up from beginner' lathe

I'll second that! - I used to work for Matrix & Alfred Herbert, both of which had basic cast machine beds in outside store for many years. The logistics of holding stock for future potential sales is an expensive option but imperative for top quality product.
