    Joke thread

A non-smoker who was also tee-total - simply brilliant. Well worth seeking out even if you've seen it a dozen or more times before!

Gravity or spring catch for door

Would a 'Push to Close - push to Open' catch work for you? I'm sure there is a better description/name for such a device which I'm also sure Hafelle do. I used them on the first kitchen I built way back in the 70's but they should still be available.

    Olive Wood - supplies?

I last bought Olive from Woodwise UK Exotic Timbers Ltd. in Dec. 2019. That was a 28mm thick natural edge plank 200 x 575 which worked out at ~ £190 / cu ft. A previous purchase (March 2019) of a 2"Sq x 6" from a 'regular' turning blanks supplier was ~ £650 / cu ft. So to some extent it...

    Joke thread

The authorities wouldn't allow it in English so it's in Gaelic.

Hi All. Good to be here.

Only another 2-3 years ! - I'm still (semi) doing the day job and I'll be 80 on Wednesday :) My projects are also varied - many involving Clocks or clock-works, Turning in all manner of materials, 'Secret' boxes, Pens . . . . . . Have a look at my web-site.

Hi All. Good to be here.

I lived in Coventry for 62 years. Moved to Atherstone in 2001. Also have two workshops - one mostly metalwork + CNC 2.5m x 10m the other mostly woodwork + Jewellery 2.7m x 7.6m I don't usually review the "New Member Introductions" but your posting came up in the daily report.

    Whats your favourite...

... but it's not cheap! - I bought a small piece last December, close to £2k per Cubic Foot - Beautiful though.

    COP26 progress or same old

Not only 'not better' - it is apparently positively worse. I understand that there is little or no bottled water which would be allowed to be provided to our taps - Perrier has (apparently) 7 times too much salt, and another brand 50 times too much Uranium!

    BBC Scaremongering again

    Very unlikely.

    Sketchup Shop

I use it to design Clocks - I guess that could be considered a 'Gear Box' :)

    Desktop PC

I see you are in Scotland so even more reason for me to suggest 'Kustom' who are in Ayr. I've been using them for some years for most of the components I need to build the specialist PC's I build. Graeme has been a very accommodating supplier. Send him an enquiry to [email protected] -...

    Chuck question

Although originally intended for Metal working, there is no reason that this chuck can't be used for wood or industrial plastic, though I would recommend buying at least one set of [Soft] jaws which can be used 'as they are' or as 'Carriers' to hold wood or plastic [Jaws]. This does of course...

    I don't believe it!!!

@RobinBHM I suspect that you are wasting your breath (typing?) by replying to GregW. I find ALL his posts very difficult to even read never mind actually understand. For some long while I had assumed that he must be using English as a second language with little real knowledge of its complex...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

I use SketchUp along side CorelDRAW! -- both have their use, one to get the 'spacial' aspects in order and the other for the detailed workshop drawings which now-a-days includes creation of CNC drawings which can't be created from pencil & paper images :) It does depend upon the job in hand of...

Any (post 2008) Economists in the house? - Inflation.

The last (UK) Farthing was minted in 1956 and ceased to be 'legal tender' on Dec. 31st 1960. Overseas territories, such as Bermuda & Malta had one-third Farthings minted up to 1913.

Any (post 2008) Economists in the house? - Inflation.

English silver pennies prior to about 1300 had a small cross in the centre to guide the cutting into half or quarter. Pennies then were too thin to have milled edges so to combat 'clipping' Edward I introduced the 'Long cross' Penny ~1302 where the 'cross' was the same width as the diameter of...

    Coffee Table WIP(sort of)

'Kent' is not that large but you may be in Dartford, Thanet or even the south tip of Folkstone & Hythe but Tonbridge could be worth a visit. https://shop.exotichardwoods.co.uk/wood-turners-blanks.html That's the first page I found on a 10 second google search. I picked up some 10mm thick...

    Coffee Table WIP(sort of)

Why go to the trouble of Vinegar/wire wool or even dye on Oak when Dark woods like African Blackwood, Leadwood, Wenge etc. are easily available? it's not as if you need to source a large piece. The amount you need would cost pennies.

    SC3 jaw carriers

I have to disagree with that statement. I have the same chuck (from the appearance) and the very first thing I did when I bought it was remove the restrictor screw in the N°4 jaw slot. That allowed an extra capacity of about 20mm on diameter. You may argue that that screw is there to keep the...

    Thread dies, question.

That Die-Stock is suitable for use with 'Adjustable' -- ie. split -- dies and you could turn that M10 die into a split die as well. If you have access to a Dremel with a slitting disc you could cut through where the 'V' is. Starting with 9.2mm dia stock though will always be a problem and of...
