    Joke Thread III

Certainly do - - - - I worked for them on the 'Photography' counter for a number of years. In line with the thread, I remember very clearly during my first week there, a young lady asked me for a "Packet of Rendells" - I had no idea what she was talking about and had to be 'rescued' by an...

    Using spanners

My initial thought is that spanners are made from forged steel - not tool steel - so even if you were excellent at free-hand sharpening and could get some sort of cutting edge on a spanner it is unlikely to last very long. Having said that, thinking 'outside the box' has to be a good idea :)

    Unimat lathe

I have - not hidden under a bench - - - but it was stored on a high shelf for some time :) Not been used for some time but is in full working order though it doesn't have a tail-stock centre or chuck. It is mounted on a base with an integral drawer. Regrettably it owes me probably more that...

Optical illusion or just plane butchery?

You are the most correct in your assesment - the 'problem' seen by the OP is Barrel Distortion. A 'camera' - read 'Smart Phone' - cannot correct in the same way that the brain does. In this case, the brain can only accept what the 'camera' has already interpreted to be the position.

Optical illusion or just plane butchery?

They don't have a 'taper' as such they are 'barrel' shaped - though the amount is slight so the effect is subtle.

    Imperial Spanners and sockets

Sorry Tony, no, it is not! - a ½" Whit Nut / Hex Bolt head would be 0.82" A/F = 20.83mm. I'm sure you actually mean a ½" A/F Spanner which is of course 12.7mm and could be 'adjusted' to make it 13mm - whether there would be enough 'meat' in the forging to open the other end out to 17mm is...

    Router table top cover

Tufnol IS used a lot - - - not only in Aerospace but Engineering, Marine, Rail, Offshore, Electronics and Construction Industries.

    Router table top cover

Superbly! - It's essentially a Phenolic Resin impregnated material, Whale is Cotton, Kite is Paper (hence the lower cost) full details Tufnol I use it for Gears - mostly clock gears but also Myford 20DP Change gears - as well as Clock plates. It is utterly 'stable' over a wide temperature...

    Router table top cover

Without quoting or referencing my post I wasn't sure that you were talking about Tufnol @Spectric  The figures you quote do confirm that though. I agree that Whale brand Tufnol is not a cheap option but Kite Brand at 3mm thick 600 Sq is <£32 - Personally I only buy Whale but then I...

    Router table top cover

Kitchen worktop is a good posibility but I would look seriously at 'Tufnol' sheet which is available from 1mm to 50mm thick which you could use as a 'surface' ( 1, 2 3mm thick) or a solid (12, 15, 20 . . . mm) - - - available from directplastics.co.uk along with many other hard-wearing...

    Really 'Off Topic' question

'twas the first thing I did :D 😇 ... but it's still a 'faff' and took a good hour out of my busy day

    top slide / compound slide

It would (of course) but just stating the 'travel' ought to be enough  I've just done a quick test and I find a maximum travel of ~60mm. So much will depend upon the orientation of the Top-Slide and whether or not the handle becomes restricted - - that is one of the bug-bears of the...

    Really 'Off Topic' question

Thanks @worn thumbs - that is exactly the 'local' information that I'd been hoping for - and somewhat confirms my original suspicions. @HOJ - It seems as though there IS a serious scammer operating and using that address so I'm now wondering what my next move should be ?? - I'm unsure...

    Really 'Off Topic' question

Thanks for the response - - - never heard of Reddit and the idea of aproaching the Land Regisitry doesn't appeal. Going knocking might be an option if I lived somewhat closer than 120 miles ! I think that I've re-assured myself that the reason for my question is no longer imperative. I...

    Really 'Off Topic' question

On the off-chance that we have contributors in Norwich who happen to know Magdelen Street I would appreciate advice as to the current ownership of N° 40 - which I see from Google Street View in April 2022 seemed to be a music outlet called Kraken Discz - but even then it looks either run down or...

    top slide / compound slide

I've been doing some research and suggest that an easy option might well be to get a Myford Top Slide. It could be just the top slide - without the tee slot platform - or even complete with that - which is 25.4mm thick. Using 8mm HSS toolbits you could easily get the cutting edge within that...

    top slide / compound slide

That is so wrong as a suggestion Pete! - but I can see why you made it :) Chronos are 'OK' in many instances but you have to be very astute - and cautious - when viewing their offerings. The dimentioned drawing for that item shows a height of 108mm but that is just the XY Table the 'Rotary'...

    top slide / compound slide

There are a number of 'issues' that you may not have considered - - - not least of which is the 'Centre height' that you need to acheive. Adding a compound slide on top of the XY Table is likely to make it impossible to set the tools 'on centre'. The fact that you've 'got away' with your...

Modifying the air-flow to change the pitch - though there's a lot more going on in the mouth caverty which also has an impact upon that.
