    Question for a clockmaker

The Punct uses a Japanese (presumably SEIKO) quartz movement which is easily available as a replacement unit costing less than £10. It wouldn't surprise me if Punct had 'their' movements made with non-standard hand fittings though so it may need some special collets made but that's somewhat...

    Question for a clockmaker

Ah.... didn't do any 'research' just quoted from memory - which will always be tainted with prior usage :)

    Question for a clockmaker

No - simply 'point' -- though, when I was selling audio, we referred to 'Blaupunkt' as 'Blue Spot' .

    Inefficient appliance repair.

That sounds as though you are suggesting that the Ebac machines are not good value for money. I'd never heard the name before so did a quick search and with prices between £500 & £700 they don't look overpriced to me. If you ONLY get 7 years use out of one that's at worst only £100 per annum -...

    80's wood type?

That could well be why my experience is different from @niall Y - not just the 'tobacco' aroma but the 'Palma Violets', 'Shem-el-Nessim' Cashews, Licorice and many more scents that inhabit an old fashioned sweet shop 👃 Ahhhh....

    80's wood type?

I have a very different opinion on Parana Pine - beautful to work with, wonderful aroma. The few 'shelves' I rescued when my father died and mother gave up the 'sweet & tobacco' shop are still prized though there is little left. (It was 40+years ago!)

    Stanley Cap Iron Screw Thread

You are neglecting to consider the whole story - you quote the Effective Dia for 5/16 UNC only for a Class 3A fit - and even that has a tollerence :- 0.2764 - 0.2692. - The equivalent figures are for Class 2A - 0.2745 - 0.2716 Class 1A - 0.2764 - 0.2692. The BSW standard has similar...

    Stanley Cap Iron Screw Thread

Can't allow that to go unchallenged ! It would be possible to screw a 5/16 UNC screw into a 5/16 BSW Nut but only if the Nut was at the maximum allowed Dia. and the Screw was at the minimum. That is on the 'Effective' (Pitch) dia. If those two are reversed then there would be close to a...

    Thicknessing small pieces of wood

Certainly - it's how I would do it. The biggest problem is how to secure the blanks. Double sided tape can be useful but does demand that one side is already flat. I use an eccentric clamp which has about a 2mm travel but that is 10mm high so needs a sacrificial timber spacer. You could...

Trying to find/workout sizing for steel box section/tube!

If you don't aim for perfection you will never achieve it ! Since I trained as a toolmaker and at one time HAD to measure slip gauges and express the deviance from the nominal size in millionths of an inch I have retained this habit.

Trying to find/workout sizing for steel box section/tube!

5/6th is not a 'standard' that I've ever come across. If the original is 'Imperial' I suspect that it will be a nominal 7/8" which is 22.225mm. There are imperial measures which are closer to 21.5 or 21.97 mm - 27/32" = 0.84375 (21.43125mm), 55/64" = 0.859375 (21.828125mm) but not...

    Check my geometry

If you were to make a single Hexagon your method would still be a 'challenge' - put 6 together and the problem is magnified 36 times (a guess!). Absolute precision is required for this kind of project - <1mm is no where near close enough - I would be aiming for sub 0.1mm and still anticipate...

What is this guillotine type tool used for?

Not a bad memory - Though there are two 'definitions' for an [Em], one is the 'width' of a lower case 'm' for any particular point size/type face so will be variable but it is also the width of 12pts when mentioned without reference to a face or font size. I'm sure it might also be a...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

On Saturday I took the opportunity to bring it to the attention of some members of a scratch orchestra who were playing for a performance of the Mozart Requiem - it proved a great 'talking point' :) (I was singing)

Thanks for posting that - facsinating sound - very 'rich'. I'd never previously heard of the instrument.

    Record Power Warning sticker

I have been known to complain to staff at a Café where their menu lists 'Cappuccinos' & 'Paninis' - I do get strange looks!
