What is the optimal workbench length for you

I was thinking the same :)

What is the optimal workbench length for you

As you can probably surmise, I grew up in Coventry, living there for the first 62 years of my life. I appeared on stage at 'The Hippodrome' at least twice and was in the audience many, many times. It's very likely that I drank at the bar your bench material came from! I never ever recall...

What is the optimal workbench length for you

It seems that even your wife's memory is lacking :) - There was never a 'Coventry Theatre' so I have to assume that you are referencing the 'Coventry Hippodrome'. It was a travesty when the council approved the building of The Belgrade Theatre (which is still subsidised) and became a direct...

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

You're welcome - and thanks to you for not only asking 'HOW' but actually bothering to take notice! By selecting 'left' and then 'right' alignment, you can get two images side by side which is a great benefit overall to the forum.

Once you've added it, left mouse click on it - that will show [handles] at each corner, grab one and drag it to a smaller size. You can also select to have it 'Left', 'Right' or 'Centre' by slecting the [Alignment] Icon - (the first in the list). I suspect that you can also do this 'after...

    Mouldings by hand.

I've now looked even closer at the reality and see that my initial thoughts about the amount of 'undercut' are unfounded, and certainly your latest idea will make life much easier. You may have to take a further - narrower - plunge cut in the centre of your [2], but - although I only have your...

    Mouldings by hand.

Far be it from me to offer any sort of solution since I have never created anything more complex than a 'rounding over' - but, It seems to me (as an engineer) that the problem may be one of taking the cavetto (I hadn't come across the term so had to 'Google', which suggested this spelling) too...

    Tailstock support?

Hmmm... I suspect that the smallest one (black?) is in fact not a 'Live' centre ie. it doesn't spin with the work. The 'point' would be pressed into the work and the 'ring' is a restraint to stop splitting. The second size is the most familiar to me (as an engineer) and the largest (as...

    Tailstock support?

The 'hole' ought to be created with a 'Centre Drill' which makes a 60° indent. I've only ever needed sizes 1 to 4 but they do go up to [10] which is 1" dia.

What colour/Paint for external front door?

My advice - - - ALWAYS undercoat - appropriate for the colour of the top-coat - TWICE. Top-coat is 'cosmetic' and only ever needs one application.

What Wood & How to Cut

Thanks @Rewound - Yes the Chestnut SS, though I'm not too precious about the timing :) I tend to go through the grits up to 240 then apply a 'grain filler' - you'll notice that the grain on Padauk is quite open (it's one of the 'tell-tale' signs) and since I've not come across 'Padauk Grain...

What Wood & How to Cut

I suggest 'Padauk' - I've used it quite a bit and not found it to revert to the 'brown' - I do (naturally) use sanding sealer and MC Wax as a finish - specifically I made some Christmas Cruet sets using it for the Father Christmas 'Hat' some three years ago and they still retain their deep...

    Expensive gears

I won't honour that silly response with a reply except to agree that Ivan Law's book is worth a read and that I should have looked more deeply into the posting which does have tables of sizes.

    Expensive gears

That's still putting the cart before the horse! - You are now talking 3mm CP (Circular Pitch) and that gives you 19.486mm OD for a 28T gear and 49.363mm OD for a 74T gear. As I've said - work from Nº of Teeth and Ratios, then match that data to MOD (or CP) to determine the diameter -...

    Expensive gears

I wouldn't consider anything from that listing to be viable! - there is no mention of the thickness and they state specifically that the 'bore' is rough size!

    Expensive gears

You seem to have little understanding about the size of gears ! MOD 3 gears are large - I use mostly MOD 0.5 but on occasion MOD 0.3 and 0.7 - You talk of "20-50mm dia." when in reality you ought to be talking "Nº of Teeth". At MOD 3, a 5 tooth gear is 21mm dia. with a root of 6.6mm -...

    Any riveting tips?

Ah - - - Wooosh....... totally missed the 'humour' concept, I have only just arisen - yet to take tea! :D

    Any riveting tips?

I presume that you mean 'Bifurcated' rivets which surely would protrude too far below the reed and indeed no where near as secure as would be needed in this application.
