    Excellent. Your wood would run truer if you had cut a tenon to mount in the chuck. It is the shoulder of the tenon against the front face of the jaws that keeps the wood true .     As above. The standard reply is to leave the thickness 10% of the diameter. Tenon or spigot is the generally accepted name.
