    Sorby 447 jig

"Long Grind Jig (PELGJ) Using the long grind jig on the Fingernail Profiler, Deluxe Universal Sharpening System or the ProEdge allows for three different types of profile to be produced on bowl and spindle gouges. It will produce a fingernail profile, a long grind and an extra long grind...

    Spalted wood

I have no wish to disagree with such a distinguished turner as Richard Raffan but Dr Sara Robinson, who is a Professor of wood anatomy who specialises in spalting specifically states that it is a fallacy. She has done a number of Youtube videos on the subject. - (19m 48s) - (16m 42s) Well...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

@ Democritus - the video Esqy posted explains it. The rest may need to be re-positioned so that not too much of the tool overhangs the rest as wood is removed. Just remember that the guy's a pro turner, taking a large cut on a forgiving piece of timber & like any pro, he makes it look easy but...

Getting the last Marmite out of the jar

I would have thought the best tool for getting the last of the marmite out of the jar was a finger, it articulates in just the right place, then all you have to do is lick it. Fried bread & marmite is nice. Fried bread & marmalade is nice. Fried bread with marmite & marmalade is even nicer.

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Need to know what lathe to give more specific help. Photos of the problem also help. If you add a rough area of where you live to your profile you stand a chance of someone local offering help. A day with a professional turner should sort out both your technique & your sharpening problems eg you...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

I don't know actual figure, but about 10mm deflection when you press on the belt should be about right. With a bowl blank if your tool rest is parallel to the bed then you are trying to cut end grain, side grain, end grain, side grain as the blank revolves. If you place your tool rest at ninety...

My crown drive got stuck in the spindle

Good for making sure the Morse tapers, both male & female, are clean & dry. I agree that the tailstock centre needs tightening for the drive centre to maintain its drive. The softer & punkier the wood the more often you have to check. Despite what Phil says, I nearly always start a bowl or...

My crown drive got stuck in the spindle

All the mating parts of a Morse taper should be clean & dry. I obviously failed to clean mine thoroughly when I got a new lathe & had to revert to a 4lb lump hammer after a 2 1/2lb lump hammer failed to shift it. Yes you can hold a drive centre in your chuck. I do it regularly out of laziness...
