    Turning blanks from logs

I forgot to say that if you decide not to split the logs then the rule is to leave them as long as you can for as long as you can. The attached PDF on log orientation by Chas Jones may be helpful.

    Turning blanks from logs

If you want to split them down the length then do so. Then seal the ends with any old paint you happen to have lying around. The idea is to slow down the water loss so that the wood dries slower & doesn't produce the stresses caused by rapid moisture loss. No need to seal the cut faces as very...

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

I got asked to make a darning mushroom, so made a couple plus an additional shaped darning aid. The lady never turned up to collect them so they got saved in the odds & sods box. Also a piece of Monkey Puzzle tree. Only problem is that someone had drilled a hole through the centre, possibly...

Small shop dust extractor - Rutlands or Record?

I use a shop vac with a Thien Baffle instead of a cyclone which is less efficient but the extra height makes a cyclone too unwieldy. Pipe run is approx 600mm so very little loss of suction. Long spindles would require moving the dust spout but mostly it sits in one position. As I said, a...

Small shop dust extractor - Rutlands or Record?

If you add a small cyclone (£20) & collection bin in line, then you can use any vacuum cleaner you want. - Plastic Dust Separation Collector Cyclone Separator Vacuums Cleaners Filter Tool | eBay I use rainwater drain pipe & bends for the majority of my dust collection but I can add a...

    Newbie woodturner oldie tinkering woodworker

Presumably a thread protector. However as Mr D has some for sale he is not allowed to advertise that fact.

    Steb centres

Steb has become synonymous with serrated ring centres in the same way as Hoover with vacuum cleaners. They come into their own by giving more surface area contact when used on sloping ends or off centre spindle work especially when the centre overhangs the edge.

The joys of a well tuned plane

Nice. I can occasionally get a shaving like that but it depends on the wood. Considering that I was banned from woodworking class at school due to inability & that a skilled neighbour says that I'm doing it on purpose because nobody can be that bad, I must have improved. I put it down to the...

    ***** builders

I don't know how we got on to Postcrete but in its defence (no pun intended) our garden gate was installed using it over 30 years ago & is still rock solid. The same for the back fence, some 4 years old, which has withstood an attack from a neighbour's car.

    Aldi Impact Driver

My Ferrex 16v impact drill (not driver) creates holes in brick about twice as fast as my Hitachi mains impact drill.

    Safe workshop heater?

Good Question. I forgot to say in my previous supply. You can use a 12 volt car battery. Some can also run on 24v by changing a setting in the menu. I use a 12 volt, 30 amp, Regulated Power Supply connected to the mains, eg - DC 12V 30A 360W Voltage Transformer Switch Power Supply LED Strip...

    Safe workshop heater?

Go for it, you won't regret it. My diesel space heater allows me to work in a 20' x 8' concrete sectional garage with no insulation & no draught proofing. Although I have a wood burning stove the diesel heater allows me to be comfortable doing those jobs which only take 30 minutes or perhaps an...
