Also make sure it's a 4 jaw scroll chuck. That means the jaws go in & out together rather than having to adjust them singly.

    Allen Socket Screws

Set screws (or sets for short) are threaded the full length of the shaft whilst bolts are only threaded part way. This is the terminology used by the wholesalers who get it from the manufacturers. Both Screwfix & Toolstation use this terminology.

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are the winners: 1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject...

Aphorism – a pithy observation which contains a general truth. 1. The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow. 2. Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail. 3. If you don't have a sense of humour, you probably don't have any sense at all. 4...

Carbide tips can be honed with a diamond stone, normally across the top face but I see no reason why the sides can't be honed too.

Literally a grind that produces a gouge shaped like a finger with a rounded end & cutting edges on the sides rather than a square end (often call a conventional grind). Lots of names for the same thing eg. swept back, Irish, Ellsworth etc. Mainly for bowl gouges but sometimes for spindle gouges...

I make no apology for reposting this. Paraprosdokians (Winston Churchill loved them) are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected, frequently humorous. 1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you...

Bought my first lathe yesterday 😁

Agreed. Especially when you consider that my 5kw wood burner, which cost under £200 & was bought for the space available for it to fit in rather than its output, allows me to work comfortably in a concrete sectional garage, with its unlined, draughty, walls, except in freezing easterly blizzard...

Plurals We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes; but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice; yet the plural of house is houses, not hice...

Jacob said: Cheaper and utterly superior is freehand with 2 or 3 oilstones. Less than £50 will see you kitted out for life. Sharpening got rewritten by maniacs, sometime in the 80s, with the boom in DIY and hack magazine writers. Almost all traces of the simple trad system have been written out...

Water wheels cut very slowly so are ok for when your tools are correctly shaped. If you need to remove a lot of metal then you are in for a long frustrating slog not to mention the wear on the stone & water wheels aren't cheap to replace. Gouges with side cutting wings are the hardest to...

Up Is this the most useful, and confusing word in the English language? This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv],[prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the...

to recover lost photographs on memory cards

Presumably these were on a PC or laptop. The more you use the device the more likely the deleted files are to be over written therefore best to remove the hard drive & read it from another PC. If you need more help on how to do that, ask. 2 free programmes are often recommended (don't download &...
