Post a photo of the last thing you made

And that's why I could never take up woodwork as a wage earner, I'd have spent 6 or 7 hours just thinking about how to make it.

How to stop table tops bowing

Traditionally this was the purpose of breadboard table ends. Also a thin top, under an inch, is pretty flexible and if you have a traditional table frame then it’ll be held flat against this.

Shed on a steep slope project - retaining wall question

Original post was not from me, it just caught my eye and I wanted to respond, so can't answer I'm afraid.

Shed on a steep slope project - retaining wall question

The corner post supporting the retaining wall and then having the section perpendicular to this will provide a huge resistance to the retaining wall toppling over. If you do go this way you would want to attach your corner post to the existing wall, providing the same resistance to the wall...

    Dining Room Carver Chairs

Never been so happy to have a mute button, interesting vid though, especially seeing the level of CNC involvement in what is likely a small production number item. $3.6k per chair, wow, good business if you can get it. Painful to have to bin something you've worked on but sounds like it was the...

Shed on a steep slope project - retaining wall question

The back of my workshop is 50cm from the boundary wall, I chose to build in larch as it is semi-durable so should last 10yrs before I have to take off the shed cladding and replace. The cladding was installed with the building in-situ so I know it is possible. I'd not want to be in the gap...

    Wood Size / Strength

I've often noticed many woodworkers go through a 'Fred Flintstone phase', I certainly did! My first garden furniture had a 70mm thick top, it has warped incredibly over the last 5/6 years and pulled the whole frame out of alignment. Thankfully thick enough that in the next few years I plan to...

Lovely, what wood did you use for the splines and dowels, it contrasts nicely.

    New novice SW London

Welcome on board the good ship UKWorkshop. I’m a firm believer in prototyping new ideas, build a whole wardrobe to discover it does not quite work how you wanted is a tough lesson. Can you put up two rails somewhere temporary and try to out? My opinion on wardrobes is it is hard to beat IKEA on...

    Workshop (Garage) Door Build

Regards the need for braces, they are to prevent the door coming out of square when you hang it. If you screw/fix a sheet of OSB on the back it will do the same job, hence you’d not need the braces.

    Secret Santa 2024

Even before I opened this I had an inkling this would be the post. You've done such an amazing job for many years Phil, and I'm sure at times it has felt unappreciated, but I know everyone who has participated in UKWorkshop Secret Santa over the years will have appreciated all your time and...

How do you feel about the safety issues? Should it be allowed?

In this context it looks like a mom and son business being operated to their own rules and satisfaction. Whilst someone has a choice to join a larger company with poor practices and standards, if there is no regulation then it’s a race to the bottom and there is no choice for the worker.

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

Ok last attempt :) as @TomGW and myself have commented the flatness of the bed will be crucial, which you know. However, the cls bracing and rails will not be sufficient to ensure flatness and there will need to be an element of adjustment during set up. The reason I say this is because the...

    Heating question

What you have said is correct, heat loss only dependant on shop temperature and external conditions. How you maintain the internal temperature is irrelevant. More powerful heater will bring to temperature more quickly. Heater size is not relevant to heating rate only rated power. A small fan...

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

If the whole setup is in twist then I think the router height to base plate will still be constant. As an example imagine after setting it up perfectly flat you lift one corner of the set-up, there will be enough flex that I expect you could lift it by at least 1cm without the other corners...

    New Large Slab Levelling/Milling Table

My concerns would be: 1. ensuring the two main runners are flat, easy enough with a long plane over the CLS 2. ensuring the runners are not in twist, not so easy. I used a pair of cross strings from corner to corner. 3. ensuring the rig does not move as the router weight swings from one side to...

    Sander and vacuum

I have a Bosch professional ROS a GEX model I think. It is great for vibration and dust extraction with sanding nets. However it was not cheap £350ish.

Vfd vs dps vs new motor help

I’ve put VFDs on a few machines following threads/advice on various forums. Nearly all the experience I’ve run across has been stuff you could run from a 13A socket, ie sub 3kw. A consumer grade VFD at 4kw seems like a stretch and with little user experience that I’ve come across. If you do go...

Insulating A Single Skin Brick Garage Workshop

The panacea is a warm humidity controlled box within a structure that protects the warm box from the elements. A MVHR system exchanges air from outside the warm box to inside the warm box, taking away the moisture and returning the heat. This is how a passive house works.
