a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

My take on the concept is that they are expecting significant energy reduction through active control and optimization of actual temperature and perceived temperature. Rooms will run at a somewhat lower temperature most of the time, due to the technology actively heating the occupant rather than...

    New workshop soundproofing ideas

Truly soundproof is difficult, involving isolating the internal and external fabric of the building, and then having sound deadening material between. Otherwise you’re after mass and avoiding air paths, Rockwool and acoustic plasterboard are a good balance of performance and price.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I seem to have cow pat elm unfortunately.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I did some sawdust archeology, last layer is some elm. First time using it and can’t say I like the smell.

    Pent roof workshop/shed planning

If you are going to insulate then from inside to outside it is. Ply/osb, vapour barrier, stud wall with insulation, breathable membrane, battens, cladding. As Ollie78 said, Rockwool batts are much nicer to deal with than kingsman/ PIR insulation. Also PIR insulation value is heavily reduced...

    disposing of chemicals and finishes

I didn't want to suggest mixing the nitric acid and the sodium hydroxide together as it is a pretty vigorous reaction! If you go this way just make sure you make weak aqueous solutions of both before mixing.

    disposing of chemicals and finishes

Looking at the Bristol recycling center site it lists as Paint as acceptable. All your finishes and waxes would go in the paint category, this would at least reduce the volume.

Workbench top - plywood top glue or screw or both ??

If you screw it down make sure you have some depth above the screw heads. Jabbing the corner of a chisel into an exposed screw and snapping it off is frustrating when you've just sharpened it! I have a few screws in my worktop that I use as planing stops for thin pieces, managed to hit one the...

Kiln dried vs Air dried oak

Wood tries to equalize moisture content with it's surroundings. Air dried timber will be equalized with ambient conditions and I would expect to dry somewhat further once made into windows, due to one face contacting internal humidity conditions. Wood will shrink, and expose gaps. Kiln dried...

    When Will It Be Over?

Been a disastrous winter in Aberdeen for rain, I've got wet wall patches where the whole wall and mortar have become water saturated after weeks of endless wet weather and driven rain. Roll on some drier times! The long term impact of climate change for the UK is predicted to be more rainy...

There is an overdue payment under your name. Please, settle your debts ASAP, aye right.......

Oh that really made be laugh, didn't see the punch line coming at all! Having received multiple of the same scam I'm always tempted to send them to each other and ask who really has the videos of me "enduring unforgettable pleasures", so that I can ensure I pay the correct person. I find with...

These stool legs are getting the better of me - what am I doing wrong?

All we need now are the photos of the finished stool, we like photos. Great that you got this sorted and came back to tell us you did!

    Battery compatibility

Not done any research but my expectation is that the cells used in the batteries will be generic, but the electronic control, charging and protection circuitry will be manufacturer specific and match battery to tool/motor etc. Manufactures will likely see a competitive advantage from innovation...

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

I too settle on the Mitutoyo set as a present to myself a couple of months back, and there is not one for sale anywhere, but I can find no news of them being discontinued. At the moment eBay seems the only option to get one, with all the pitfalls that involves!

    Bandsaw not cutting square

Guides should not pinch the blade, correct. One bearing rotating means the blade is preferentially loaded that direction, however it may only just be touching the bearing to make it spin. Squaring ends of stock is not a job the band-saw is ideally suited to due to the flexibility of the blade...

    DIY window shutters?

Sometimes I find it easier to picture things is inches, this is one of those times. 1/2” feels too skinny, 3/4” feels like it’s getting too heavy, 5/8” is probably about right. In terms of your design of a central panel with placed on strips, I think you would need strips on both sides of the...

Workshop wet and dry Vaccuum recommendations approx 48l

I have the own brand one from screwfix, which I've been abusing for going on 5+yrs. Their current Titan one gets reasonable reviews for the price, except the tools are terrible quality so keep those from your Karcher.

Anyone making good money from tables?

Not telling anyone, i've finally found a good one, who will give me an estimate, works hard, and then charges me for the time the job actually takes.

    Software for planning application

SketchUp is not too hard to get to a level where you could achieve this. However as Colin has said a hand sketch or something in powerpoint etc may be more than adequate. I did a planning application for my shed build, as I'm in a conservation area, and whilst I used sketchup the actual...
