Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

Artie, You seem to have a bee in your bonnet over EVs. I sit in the opposite camp with the opinion that they are part of the solution, help me understand your view point. My thoughts are below, but on the whole I think EVs are an important part of the solution to reducing carbon emissions...

    Garden workshop - planning permission

I built under planning permission, process was easy and used simple drawings. My drawings had hoizontal cladding but ended up going with vertical, planning officer who signed off said nothing. Building proportions and shape were as per plans. Cladding material was as per plans. I expect it’ll...

    Workbench Build

I was just pondering this last night. At present the tenons are taller than the worktop thickness. The top is not glued to the tenons so it can be removed. I think I will trim the tenons a millimetre or so below the top thickness, then I can flatten without this issue.

    Workbench Build

18 months on I’ve done some more! Tenons cut on the top of each leg with the bandsaw. Individual boards are used to make up the mortices around the tenons. The front of the split top aligns with the leg fronts, there will be a leg vice on the left leg and a sliding deadman. The front board...

    New workshop power installation quote

All you want is a quote with materials and expected hours and a per hour rate, + an overheads percentage. It would then be possible to understand the breakdown and decide if the hourly rate and number of hours is reasonable. Getting a quote like this is almost unheard of. Recently I lucked out...

What is a proper jointing technique?

Lots of good advice above. Only addition from me is to think about what outcome you want and then work towards it. What I mean is with a bowed board I will often mark the line on the side that I want/hope to achieve. If I find I’m approaching the line on the front end too fast I flip the board...

    Hello from the basement

There’s a film about that, but I don’t think it’s woodwork based ;) Welcome onboard. Fitz.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A rewarding Friday evening build. Finally a place for all my clamps that I got sick of being shoved in various random places. Built using 12mm ply a had leftover, a french cleat to wall mount. Still worried about the weight of all the clamps, time will judge

    Parkside speed clamps

I had a set and they have a good bite and don't slip when set (unlike the Wicks ones that were cheap a few years ago), however handles have a tendency to break if you try and exert too much clamping force. Use them for lighter weight jobs and sure they will be fine, try and clamp up an edge...

I have chopping boards of oak, beach, bamboo, rubber wood, and sycamore. Never noticed any difference between them. I did have an ash one, but the very open grain got bits in it that were hard to get out.

How not to drill a pen blank or turning your jacobs chuck into a hammer!

Survived to fight another day. Your despondent shoulder drop at the end of the video made me smile, been there felt that.

‘Bus blind’ illuminated art work. Scottish elm case with simple rabbet glued joints at corners. Glass is held in 5mm groves and the back has two ‘stretchers’ to add some stiffness, the upper one is also a French cleat. The elm was stinky to work, cowpat elm as someone called it, and moved...

Sound and heat proofing garden studio

Fibreglass insulation is considered poor for sound insulation, it also tends to slump in cavities overtime so not great for thermal either. Rockwool batts are a better option.

    Stopcock or Gate Valve?

Valves in a fluid system do two jobs: - isolate the flow - control the flow An isolation valve is typically designed to be either open or closed, and to achieve this with the minimum of efforts. Quarter turn ball valves are a great example of this technology. Control valves are designed to...
