Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

Thank you very much Jacob for precious advice. I have already set the teeth, because I needed to file at least 2 cm in incremental steps, to remove the hollow in the middle of the saw, so not much set was left. The kerf was too thick, so I used a hammer and anvil and evened it out. Now it is...

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

I was afraid to proceed with further sharpening because when I sharpen each tooth to a point, some teeth requires more strokes to remove the flat and some less - thus making them of unequal height. I can sharpen partially from one side and partially from other side, so I will not remove the...

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

The mystery is now resolved. I had a substantial amount of teeth where little triangular flat spots were on the top of the tooth. I will try to sharpen them in a way that a sharp point will be made on every tooth and try to make all the teeth level at the same time.

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

Ian, I want to have a more aggresive crosscut saw for initial trimming rough material, not for final work. Thank you for the stick guide, I will make one today and try it out.

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

Thank you Ian for your response. I always thought that less rake and fleam = more aggressive cutting, thus faster speed and less clean cut. I did not think that having more fleam can make my cutting faster. So my next configuration will be 15° of rake and 15 ° of fleam. I will try to maintain...

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

Thank you very much D_W, The problem might be that there could be some teeth where the front and back of the tooth do not meet at a single point ( there could be a little flat spot). I will check the saw tomorrow. What is a bigger issue in speed? Not to have all the teeth sharpened to a...

Crosscut Saw cutting slow - sharpening advice

Hello, I have bought a 26" 7 ppi crosscut saw and I have sharpened it. I have watched multiple videos on sharpening both rip and crosscut saws (Paul Sellers, Frank Strazza, Wood By Wright, etc.) I have used around 10° of rake and 12,5° of fleam. I will cut mostly hardwoods. The saw has a...

Workshop DYI build plan - feedback needed

Thank you very much all. Actually, I have a neighbour at the lumber mill, so he will cut me any size I want, I am not limited by any standard sizes, metric or imperial. I will remove the noggins and add more studs at the 600 mm spacing. Also, move the door out of the corner to create a space...

Workshop DYI build plan - feedback needed

Hello, I would like to build my own workshop with size 4x4 m. The attic of the gable roof will be used as a storage area for unnecessary household items. I used to work as a self-taught engineering CAD designer, but I have little to none knowledge of timber construction, structural engineering...

I would see that it is fake, because dovetails will look way to machined :)

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

I have a thicknesser myself, but it is not strong enough for reclaimed oak for boards with 20 cm width, as I have just found out.

I would personally love to know If there is any piece of furniture made by Jesus that is still existing somewhere? I know that this would be impossible to proove.

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

Thank you very much Tom, I follow already 1/3 of the list that you have posted. I will watch the rest to get some additional knowledge and inspiration. With my restrictions, hand tool only is the only way I can start working with wood at the place where I live. It is not a matter of preference...

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

Derek, Thank you for your answer. I need to go the hand tool only route because of my neighbourhood and space restrictions. I have a Makita NB2012 12" thickness planer. I planed one side of 8" wide dry oak by hand and ran it through the thickness planer. The machine suffered a lot and the...

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

I am mostly interested in people who actually dimension rough sawn lumber by hand. They don't actually need to use a saw pit. Although I am curious to know if the guy who was down in the pit was better paid than the one who was at the top due to the fact that all the debris from sawing was...

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

He is Rob Cosman of the 18th century, right? I might read his books to learn more about the period techniques, but personally, I would not like to replicate his furniture for my own house, as my main woodworking goal is to replace every MDF board piece of furniture in my house with mine hand...

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

Hello, Can you please help me create a list of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools for their work? I would like to get to know new names for inspiration. By hand tools only I mean people who besides joinery also dimension their wood by hand (saw and plane). I already know: - Tom...
