Hand planing long boards for workbench top

I am not planing anything hollow on purpose. I am just removing high spots until they get to the lowest point on the board. When I am able to reach that lowest point by planing away the surrounding higher areas. I do it very similarly as you do, but I do not use plane as a straightedge but a...

Hand planing long boards for workbench top

Good evening, I am now hand planing boards of maple for my new workbench top. The total width of the workbench will be 600 mm. My original idea was to use two 250 mm boards and have a 100 mm well with a recessed board in the middle. But the maple boards were so twisted that I had to rip them in...

Planing strategy glued up legs with hand planes

I have thought about laminating two 45 mm x 280 mm boards on top of each other for my tabletop to get 90 mm thickness for the workbench, but I have never seen it done this way. Is not it too wide for doing a face-to-face glue-up? Everybody is laminating in a way that the edge of the board is on...

Planing strategy glued up legs with hand planes

Thanks Jacob, I have used B only once recently, when yield was the problem and I could not afford loosing any more thickness. That is why I started to think about it more.

Planing strategy glued up legs with hand planes

Hello, I would like to ask about your opinion on planing strategy for gluing up legs from two pieces (Currently, I do not have jointer and thicknesser, so I work with hand planes only). I have tried both methods described below and I would like to know which one makes more sense for you and...

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

The reason why I started this thread was not to find a greatest cabinetmaker alive, but to find kind of people, who will be remembered in 100 years as the good ones. Like those from 19th and 20th century that are being remembered and mentioned now.

    Maple - hard or soft

It does not matter, I just wanted to know, what I have (if someone asked me about the workbench).

    Maple - hard or soft

Hello, I have just bought maple for making a workbench ( I made up my mind and changed it from steamed beech as the lumberyard had some extra stock of maple that was not listed on their website). Here in Slovakia, they sell it as maple. I would like to know if it is soft or hard maple and if...

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

He made DVDs :) Actually, @MikeK studied with him, so he might have seen some of his furniture in person. As far as I know, after completing his studies with Edward Baly (founding member of Devon Guild of Craftsmen, also mentioned in the book written by Alan Peters), he started to teach...

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

Hello, The 20th century had its fair share of great cabinet makers/woodworkers, e.g. Ernest Gimson, Edward Barnsley, Alan Peters, Karl Malmsten, Gustav Stickley, Robert Thomson, James Krenov, Charles Sumner and Henry Mather Greene, George Nakashima, etc. - some of them were actually...

    Plane - Sole Contact Points

Welcome to the underground community of woodworkers, who can actually use the cap iron to get a great finish. No high-angle frogs, closed mouths and 300 000 grit honing fluids are required :) Beware: This community gets ridiculed, well .... from all other woodworkers.

Thanks. I will do it this way and apply the product before applying the final finish.

How to treat worms in walnut?

I will see if some piles of wood dust will be around the bench. All my indoor wood (except the woodshop itself) has a moisture content below 6 % (minimum what my moisture meter is able to read). The walnut has moisture below 15%, as it has been air-dried. Mostly around 10-12%.

How to treat worms in walnut?

Yes, it is much cheaper than in Germany. Are the prices for rough sawn walnut or planed? Here in Slovakia, there might be only a few sawmills that offer planing. Every woodworker does it himself. I am now cutting my walnut into rough dimensions and it still has some wormholes here and there...
