How long did it take you ( or your students) to learn to cut gapless dovetails

I am just practicing sawing straight to the line. I have made this dovetail template. I can mostly now follow the line, with being maybe 0,1-0,2 mm off of the line. But I will not know if this is accurate enough until I assemble the first dovetail and see if there are any gaps.

How long did it take you ( or your students) to learn to cut gapless dovetails

Hello, I am now building a simple L-shaped wall coat rack for my parents. One side will be screwed into the wood wall and another side should hold in the plasterboard (by using the plasterboard dowel). I would like it to hold mostly on the side, where the coat rack will be screwed into the...

What is your go-to hand tool for chamfering or rounding edges

This is the kind of round that I am looking for, or even a bit smaller, just to be clear This might be the ideal size for me

What is your go-to hand tool for chamfering or rounding edges

Garrett Hack is famous for advocating scratch stock. You can find it also in Robert Wearing's books.

What is your go-to hand tool for chamfering or rounding edges

I have read negative reviews for those Woodpecker's copies that the blade cannot advance enough to make a cut because of some manufacturing issues and the finish red paint just peels off and ruins the wood finish. Do you have a good experience with it?

What is your go-to hand tool for chamfering or rounding edges

Can you get a pretty symmetric and even result with a spokeshave/hand plane? Do you draw lines of the boundaries or do you just do it by eye?

What is your go-to hand tool for chamfering or rounding edges

Hello, What hand tool do you use for chamfering/rounding edges on your furniture, if you do not use a powered trim router with an appropriate bit. I do not mean excessive round/chamfer, just a small one so that the edge is not sharp. Do you use a block plane, smoothing plane, file, spokeshave...

Woodwork design software other than Sketchup ?

You can also use Solid Edge community edition for hobbyist. It is a full version of the commercial software. As a former professional Autodesk Inventor user, it is difficult for me to get used to a different workflow, but the software is very competent. I would use Fusion360, buy they now...

    Troubleshooting benchtop thickness planer Makita

Good afternoon, I will probably sell my benchtop planer, as I do not have space and voltage for a proper dust extraction system to run simultaneously with the thickness planer. As I am working with hand tools only, I would get rid of this crutch and go cold turkey. It was only used a little so...

In which year did you start woodworking

Maybe we can hand plane our stocks of wood so flat, that it will wringe together like metal gauge blocks. No glue needed. :)

In which year did you start woodworking

But you have still started doing your proper woodwork, as you call it, 3 years before I was born. As far as I know, Paul Sellers had a day job as a police officer for I do not know how many years.

In which year did you start woodworking

You must start using more sentences like "In my 70 years of woodworking" or "I have been using this method for 70 years." or "Every day for the last 70 years, eight hours a day, six days a week" ...

In which year did you start woodworking

Jacob, you have started woodworking 13 years before Paul Sellers :) So congratulations on your 70th anniversary as a woodworker. You are a woodworker as long as The Queen is a queen.

In which year did you start woodworking

Good morning, It would be interesting to find out who is the active member with most years since she/he started woodworking here on the forum. I have 3 questions, if you like you can answer all of them, or any of them. Your answers can inspire others in their woodworking endeavours. 1. In...

Is it possible to maintain a camber on the jack plane indefinitely

I try to get as close to edge as possible, without actually burning it off. But my grinding technique is different. I just go one pass with light pressure and then let the air from the grinder cool the blade for a few seconds. No water and no continuous grinding from side to side. I occasionally...

Is it possible to maintain a camber on the jack plane indefinitely

I used 1200 diamond stone to remove the burr, if working on a lower grit or equal stone, then I removed the burr on Agate stone or strop when using them for the bevel part as well. I may try to use Agate or Strop only and not use 1200 stone for removing burr when working the bevel on the lower...

Is it possible to maintain a camber on the jack plane indefinitely

I have learned from both of you a lot, so I am thankful for that. David is more of a scientific guy and he can provide information that is hard to find, unless you study a lot of historical books, metallurgy, Japanese cap iron papers, etc. He is more of a hand tool guy like myself. You give...

Thank you, it can be done this way as well.

Is it possible to maintain a camber on the jack plane indefinitely

No I sharpen freehand. I had a honing guide, but it was out of square by manufacturing fault, so I threw it away last year. Maybe I will buy a better one, once I will buy a bevel up plane or any speciality plane , if ever.
