    New pyro based project idea

I’ve had an experiment at burning on one of my turnings. Inspired by the Turner Molly Winton, a basket weave type texture with some stylised flowers. Sort of thinking about some of the wild fires seen in US / Australia and new growth coming back. Would love to hear your thoughts and...

    Oak dowel

Hi. Not sure how much you need / frequency but I know Rob cosman has a YouTube video on making dowel as he uses it to make his hidden hinge boxes (and it’s made via a handheld tool with timber spun by battery drill - no lathe required!) s

    Little oak box

steve, guess depends how big piece left over is. Anything from couple of pen blanks to laminate for mortar / pestle or really nice platter. (btw - watch yourself with iroko - dust mask / extraction a must and I always have a shower when I come back into house after turning it. Can be nasty stuff!)

    Little oak box

Some nice time in workshop this afternoon. Simple little oak box, chestnut ebonising lacquer, silver gilt cream, W22 on outside and my favorite lemon oil finish on the Inside. simon.

    Chuck jaws sizing jig

Got fed up of keep measuring spigot sizes as had a bit of ‘seeing the light‘ moment recently when took time to size chucking points to jaws so they close to close to perfect round. My better hold and less marking timber. So, 20 min, aluminium door push plate, stamps and centre punch and got...

    Axminster SK114 chuck thread

Agree re m33x3.5. Increasingly the ‘go to’ size for larger wood turning lathes. also I don’t see an advantage to MT3, indeed, will it fit in a M33 spindle without wall getting too thin?

Fester - I have to ask, how did you make the first tool?!?! 🤔

    Lathe progression?

my history is clarke single tube lathe. Got me interested but not the greatest alas! axminster m900 vicmarc 300 (amd now vicmarc 100 too as a second lathe for my lad - honest!)

    Tri wing bowl

This one is only small - started with a 3” cube. Not 100% sure of wood as came out of box of off cuts I keep under bandsaw to burn or use as waste blocks etc. Think it may be sapele or iroko - close, straight n boring grain. Tiny bit oily / waxy to work with. Simon

    Tri wing bowl

Thanks J-G - it was more of a rhetorical / ironic question - the cube was turned between corners so you do this three wing effect from the diagonal section of the six faces - still makes me smile though - a triangle out of a cube, turned on something designed to make cylinders!

    Tri wing bowl

Tried something a little different this afternoon - made a tri-wing bowl trinket dish. (Made from a cube so how does it end up with three wings, not four - makes my head hurt!)

Inside Bowl - Final Cut Problem

Lots of good advice above. From photos chucking hold point does look quite small (especially as you will have the odd catch as you learn and find your way). Have you got a flat the jaws are registering against? This photo I found on web illustrates the correct way to grip a tenon very well.

    Fig logs

Just end grain is fine. keep them out of sunlight/ direct wind. Fruitwood can be more prone to split than other hardwood so fingers crossed. (Other option is to rough turn now- leave wall thickness roughly 15% diameter to allow for movement and enough ‘meat’ to return round when dry.

(Potential) beginner all at sea about gouge profiles.

When you look there will be lots of sizes available. I’d suggest a 3/8” gouge would be ideal. if you think you’ll do a bit of turning the future but not loads, you could do far worse than the axminster craft set of tools that give you all you need for most projects you’ll want to do as a set...

    Chuck help needed please

There are several different jaws Axminster do that would hold directly. If you plan to to a lot of these then I would be tempted to buy a set of jaw plates, attach some waste timber and turn some step jaws like below. I have similar and very helpful for all sorts of light cut finishing of small...
