Thought I'd say Hi and ask some advice.

I would recommend, as you got the grinder gratis, that you get a 'white' wheel for the grinder. It is what is needed to sharpen HSS tools, a bog std grey wheel as supplied with most DIY grinders is not really suitable. Simon

    A Chisel Question

Matt Hamlet set looks like a radiused edge skew so I agree, leave that one as is Crown skew appears basic rectangular from photo so could become scraper. I see you have a round end scraper, could go to a square end scraper, a bespoke box scraper, tighter radius or any other profile you would...

Thought I'd say Hi and ask some advice.

re paint, i'd expect anything desgned for metal would be fine, other than providing a coating it is really only decrative. Hamerite springs to mind but i suspect your selection is fine also.

    Hollowing tool recommendations please

I have several, (Rolly, Woodcut, Exocet, Sorby RS2000 kit, Keltons (3 sizes) plus some others at the back of the tool draw i'm sure. Depending on what your making, I think that the Rolly is the most versatile (i'd go for the larger dia shaft first - if your new to hollowing then being able to...

Thought I'd say Hi and ask some advice.

Ryan, as you are so close i'd give these folks a look. They have a really excellent tuition arrangement and I'd think well worth the bridge toll. http://www.maxcareywoodturningtrust.org.uk BRgds Simon

    Axminster Super Precision chuck

Excellent chuck, no issues. You only have to look at any prof turners workshuop to find one (and usually more). Now out of production I wonder whether 2nd hand ones will have a premium?! Simon

Woodturning Chucks - Some info for those new to the hobby

Just thought, thread title should read scroll chucks. There are vacuum chucks also :tool: , and also magnetic chucks but I've never had much success with those when turning (except with iron wood of course!). S

Woodturning Chucks - Some info for those new to the hobby

A really nice summary Robbo, I'm sure many will find this useful. The only bit I would comment on, you say "If we agree that they all do what they are supposed to do". In my experience, the more expensive do tend to have slightly better manufacturing tolerances so jaws slide better, with less...

How to know if bearongs are worn?

What type of lathe is it?

    Good starting Chuck 2013?

I think the model in question was the 80 mm chuck rather than a 100 mm chuck that has the full range available. Like you, I'd have gone for a APTC 100 mm chuck but maybe next time! Simon

    Hollowing tool

Geoff, Before offering an answer, could I ask what sort of application you have (work you hope to do + knowledge of what lathe you have will help providing an answer that is as future proof as possible). Simon

New Axminster AWVSL900 or second hand Record Power CL4 lathe

Mike, have you used either of these lathes (generically, not necessarily the specific machine)? Others will have a view on which is 'better' but personal preference will have a strong part to play. For me, I can't get on with the twin bar, record arrangement so would prefer the cast format of...

    Good starting Chuck 2013?

Not being funny but being new, one set will be fine while you get going. The C jaws will hold anything the lathe can fit (I've turned 18" platters and more in C jaws) so no worries there. The next / other set some find useful for this size lathe may be the small o'donnell jaws but they can...

    Problem using a chuck (Resolved)

Hi there, Tricky to be too prescriptive without seeing the situation but I would make the following points: From your description I think you are expanding the jaws into a recess? No matter, what is of paramount importance is the quality of the shoulder you turn that will be held against the...

    South Wales club.....?

Hi there. Probably a bit far for a regular club but worth looking at the avon n Bristol club, or more specifically the workshop run under the 'Max Carey woodturning foundation' in portishead. They offer tuition, though you have options on locally it seems, but they also have some 20+ lathes of...

    Pen making stuff near Swansea/Cardiff

Toolite in mitcheldean is worth a trip in itself, a real Aladdin's cave (and stocks Sorby, crown, record at least plus loads of other stuff).

    Pen kits for beginner

A good list from Nev. Note, I don't use a barrel trimmer as I have a sanding disc machine and use that back to sand back to just above the brass tube (I have seen others use a sanding sheet on a disc held in the lathe with a home made table clipped onto the lathe bed, which is useful for many...

    My bowls and my lathe.

Hi dan, Some really great first projects and I'd echo the comments above. One point not mentioned is that (and it could be the photos) is that the iroko bowl is a side grain piece (the 'traditional' orientation) and the ash pieces are all end grain. Not sure if this was dictated but timber...
