    What lathe for A-levels?

William, Not sure if it is still operating as an initiative but the AWGB used to do a loan scheme where they would medium term load a lathe and some basic tooling to new comers to get them going. They are also keen to encourage younger terms so unless you are a mature student at college you...

    Plastic or metal ducting?

I have plastic ducting but have a camvac dust extractor that sucks into a metal waste container so even if there is a small fire, my hope is that it should be contained. (note mine extract system is really dust only, not chippings / shavings from p/t etc which I accept is more voluminous and...

    Tool maintenance

yes ........but! Beware, if you have a light coat of oil on your tools they will stay rust free - a good thing. However, it is tricky to avoid some of it getting onto your hands when you next use them and if that then gets onto a clear surface pre finish being applied it can cause problems...

    Axminster or Jet

Looking at the specs I'd be tempted by the APTC machine. Jet machines do have a nice finish to them but to be honest, an hour with a fine file would remove the sharp burrs that may be present on the Axminster machine and leave you with a comprable finish, more power and a couple of quid in your...

    New To Forum and Turning

I agree with Paul I think. One thing to watch, some the hardwoods, especially iroko in my experience but most to a greater or lesser extent, have dust than is none too good for you. If you've not got a reasonable quality dust mask and have a friend / neighbour kind enough to gift such nice...

    My learning piece thread

Re the chuck, you can still hold a piece like this, just get it good enough centred and whilst the bit of waste in the jaws will be ecentric to the rest of the turned item, when you part it off the finished piece will be fine. Re the calipers, depending on which ones you've ordered, the first...

    Suggestions for my first lathe...

You should be able to get something, probably best go for used good quality than new bottom end stuff. I had a Axminster m900 that I started and would be within your budget used. Axmister also make many similar other models that are all fine. Many swear by Record Power lathes, I must admit...

    Suggestions for my first lathe...

Hi, The first question I have is to ask whether your budget is for the lathe alone or whether this needs to cover 5 or 6 core tools and a grinder with a 'white' aluminium oxide wheel as you'll need this as well together with a starter kit of abrasives and a dust mask of some sort. I notice...
