    New, with a skew...

As above really. The traditional way of using a skew is with the rest roughly level with the top third of the piece. Do you have a photo of your set-up as it is unusual for this not to be possible? BRgds Simon

My bench - just to prove I have one. First attempt at a pic.

I like the way you've designed in plenty of weight to the bench to keep it nice and solid with many wood themed items loaded underneath as ballast.

Anyone else got some spare shuttering ply and a spare 5 minutes? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... ID=EBAY-GB (Or am I being too harsh  ?) Simon

    For my next question...chucks

I understand logic re responsive pricing etc but the catalogue is invaluable in terms of see the range set out and being able to compare even if it was produced without prices that were set on-line. S

looking to buy a wet stone grinder for flat chisels

Interesting, if you get time some sort of initial review would be a good read I'm sure from the point of view of one newish to this type of device. (Also there was a thread a short while ago with folks on here getting together to bulk buy (and therefore save some cash) on pro edge belts - may...

looking to buy a wet stone grinder for flat chisels

What are you trying to achieve. The thread title mentions 'flat' chisels, presumably you're referring to the backs and none of the products mentioned will do that for you. Bevels and re-sharpening yes, flattening backs, nope. How much do you think you will use it and what for? If it is hobby...

    My Last bowl..... nearly

I had read that yew could have health effects but I don't think they were that dramatic / quick acting! Presumable the cooking was ok at your friend's house? Seriously, glad to hear you home and ok / repaired - take it easy, Simon.

    Pear bowl / wood movement

Scary insn't it. To think, Vicmarc marketed a device to turn ovals on a lathe for over £1500, not reqd, just get the wood choice right and let nature do her thing! I guess all other fast growing timbers will have the same effect which would include most fruit wood etc. I know there are a...

    Does size matter?

Only downside of my Vicmarc 300 short-bed - tailstock is f.heavy lifting up n down but I suppose it is good for me (sort of!) S

    Does size matter?

As others have said, build / weight is important for the larger stuff. Could you say which models specifically you are looking at? Also consider range of speeds. Variable or pulley change? If you want to turn larger stuff then variable is a real bonus as you can avoid resonant speeds and...

Frank Howarth's mamoth workshop being created

Great guy and makes some nice projects across all sorts of wood working skills (with typical US focus on machine tools!) Also look at more recent YT videos he has done with 360 in-built footage where you can pan around the workshop away from the main action - really cool feature! S
