    New Year Clear-out

If it's not too late, keep one or two in the workshop. I use them if I'm doing some carving / pyro / staining / airbrushing etc either to 'doodle' on to get something I like or simple to practice on before screwing up the piece I really want. Also you can divide into panels as a sampler if...

    hello, new woodturner! Quick question..

Hi Undergruntled - welcome to the forum. My guess is the 'complicated' thing is a multi-star or similar type chuck with removable she'll jaw plates and maybe even the odd elastic band if we're lucky - if so, best start growing at least one if not two, extra arms! Seriously, post a...

Anyone got a Myford size headstock tap in Bristol / Glos?

Thanks for the advice all. Simon

    different wood lathes

It is a nice lathe and for the money (esp at moment with the sale on) is a good value new machine. They do come up used reasonably often but once you add in the hassle of collection if it is not super local and the value of the 3 yr warranty to you then it makes reasonable sense. The lathe is...

    Lathe repair advice needed

With the wood removed but with a faceplate / chuck attached, can you feel any play in the headstock bearings if you grab the (stationary!) faceplate / chuck and try to move it either axialy or raidially? S

Newbie in need of help - Scheppach Lathe

Anyone got a Myford size headstock tap in Bristol / Glos?

I know it's a bit lame but my metal turning is not up to my woodturning just yet - I'm a bit of a newbie and trying to get my lathe commissioned so I don't have an internal thread witworth profiled boring bar, my ML7 does not have a gearbox and I think the change wheels are for a different lathe...

Anyone got a Myford size headstock tap in Bristol / Glos?

Hi Folks, I've got a damaged chuck thread that I need to clean up for a Myford lathe. Does anyone have a 1 1/8", 12 tpi witworth tap in the Bristol / Glos area I could borrow to clean up the thread? THanks Simon

    different wood lathes

Wow, what an open question. To help I'd make the following recommendations: 1) If you're not sure if this is for you, buy a used machine. Lathes (well looked after) tend to lose value from new to second hand and then further depreciation is very slow so if you buy a used good condition...

A very nice shop and super tidy - needs some shavings and finish splashes to give it that lived in look! What sort of work do you mainly do? Simon

    Sharpening question

Ok - thanks WP. - Different strokes for different folks I guess (no pun intended). Not heard the piece about diamond re steel but agree, those worms are best left in the can round here! BRgds Simon.

Chas - so the 'David Charleworth' Rule Trick (TM) comes to turning also? S

    Sharpening question

Why is this (just interested). I've seen some pretty shocking, corse and non-flat cheapo 'diamond' stones at the odd tool sale but the better brands 'superfine' / 1000 grit + grades I find work well and are comparable to the equivalent stone. For grades equivalent to the 2000+ grit then I...

    Muddlers

In earlier (student!) years I do remember drinking vodka etc poured over 'smashed' lime, icing sugar and ice. I seem to remember butt end of wooden spoons were the weapon of choice but this looks like a more elegant solution, if only any of us would have had the forethought to visit a craft...

    Which course?

Also, forgot to say there are weekly / evening courses both at Orchard Worshops (Bristiol) and Stanton Guildhouse (Chelt + a bit!) that may be yet another option. S

    Which course?

Nick, Drop me a PM if you like with your contact details. I'm in Nailsworth and would be happy to spend an evening working together at either your or my workshop (or both - any excuse!). I have been a member of both the Avon / Bristol and Glos Association woodturner's club so can let you...
