Homemade Vac Chuck 'Chuck' options (Warning- picture heavy)

Hi Robbo, Thanks for kind words. Foam was just self adhesive 2mm stuff from hobby craft. Nylon I had in workshop - saw at car boot for £10 for a piece 100mm OD X 500mm long so too good to leave there even if I did not know what I was going to do with it at the time! S

    Too many lathes

Don't worry - still very much enjoying every day. Just could do with 36 hrs / day and 8 days / week to fit in kids, time with Mrs B, work, golf, turning, garden, boats, gliders, motorbikes, fast cars, beer n wine, top notch food, ............ Grrr - wishing time would slow down not speed up...

Coronet no 1 tool rest banjo

I'd be tempted to look into the record option first. Quite a lot of shock / dynamic load when turning (especially when learning  ) - welding / brazing can cause local changes to hardness etc that could result in sudden failure. Better to replace if possible. Simon

    Too many lathes

Nice to hear I'm not the only one Bobblezard - as of this year I'm still staring down the wrong end of 20 + years to go and just had work savage the pension benefits so can't see my finishing any time soon! Still, mustn't grumble I'm told. Simon

Homemade Vac Chuck 'Chuck' options (Warning- picture heavy)

So, always wanted a vac chuck system but not sure of options / how to sort the chucking? There are many articles / commercially available vac systems available, indeed, some lathes are now being supplied with the facility built in. I have an airpress pump and rotary adaptor that was surplus...

    Castle Box

I had 'help' in the workshop today from my little lad (4 yrs old). He asked for a little box to put the cannon balls in that came with his Playmobile castle set so I made this little turret box. Not sure what timber (iroko perhaps), some random scrap bin off-cut and a bit dry n dusty to turn...

Please Post Your SPRING Woodturning Challenge Entry Here

Well, here is my entry. It is a small hollow form by way of homage to Don Derry, a US turner that I really like and enjoy his work. This was made from a piece of mulbury rescued from the log pile. A 3" cube shaped, hollowed and airbrushed with acrylics and finished in a gloss lacquer and...

    Suits yew sir...

Great thought, shame they weren't cut a bit differently to be best suited for turning. I'm not sure how yew tends to dry / shake but you may be well adviced to try and cut into rough blanks not and seal end-grain to release some of the stresses to avoid losing the lot to random shakes. Log on...

    Little ash box

I think this latest one would look good in a little stand. Try turning a hemispherical bowl with hole in base to take pot when a slice is taken through centre and up-turned. Like this idea (all be it this is a more complex box turned from a plank by Jimmy clews). S

Where to buy Robert Sorby turning tools online good value

As Mick said really, I have one but tend to go for my crown blade style parting tool 19 times out of 20! Give it a go by all means, perhaps a tiny bit better finish if you turn loads of pine / softwoods but I can't see the difference in any normal hardwood. Brgds S

    Chuck recommendations

Hi there, So, today's the day - really interested in delivery / set up photos if you can find time to share. Re the chuck, I'd avoid the spindle adaptors that step down threads for all but occasional use - ends up with chuck half way up the bed and just doesn't look right to me! So, which...

    Little ash box

They are really nice little boxes. The bit I forgot to mention was how nicely turned the finials are. The detail is really crisp, it is so easy round over details with abrasive at that scale and the balls that top the finials also look spherical, again not easy at that scale. The also look...

    Little ash box

Hi, A nice box and many thanks for posting. To offer some comments or things to think about (which you may or may not agree with and should not take away from a nice, clean and well finished item) 1) lid fit. Much is made an the 'pop' one can achieve with a super accurate fit but for this...

Anyone ID this tool? ( Pt 2)

AI sell handles as well at shows so may be a homemade tool in an AI handle. Grinding looks a bit primitive for production tool, even an old one although I guess it could be successive years of abuse! I'd guess captive ring also, normally flat and sharpened with a wipe across the top face with a...

    Back lighting

Self adhesive LED strip as was stated, tool station amongst others sell it and it is inexpensive and easy. I am told it is possible to implement on variable position shelves also by running the power through the metal shelf supports (it is only 12v so quite safe) but I've not seen this done. S

    coronet number 1 lathe?

Is it possible to post a photo (you may need 10 posts to do this to beat the anti-spam protection). It is possible to dress / re-cut the threads but I'm more concerned with the off centre comment. The spindle in the headstock is now off centre or the chuck mis-aligns when preseted to the...

    my shop

Nice space. When I set out garage out I pained the walls with some white masonry paint. Massive difference to the light at the benches and overall feel of the place. Worth thinking about perhaps? Thanks for sharing, Simon

    33mm spindle tap anyone?

(Of Toolpost) - which is a really shame as I have visited their shop (didcot iirc) which is really nice, very well stocked and a great place to look at loads of more exotic kit (they were a supplier for oneway / kelton tools and had mcnaughton centre saver kits etc in stock to look at), all...

Good 'budget' chuck - does is exist?ML7

Just bit the bullet and ordered 125mm 3 jaw from RDG. Yep, could re-machine new backplate etc but at £55 for ebay chuck, £20 for backplate I've pretty much spent the cost of a new unit and does not have external jaws or chuck key so new n shiny it is. THanks for input above. Simon

    33mm spindle tap anyone?

Duncan - point noted, I may yet end up doing just that. I the meantime I have ordered the spindle tap from RDG (similar price / spec to Toolpost but free postage, Toolpost are circa £6 p&p on a £20 item - is this always the case or have they decided they are not in the mail order business for...
