    vacuum pump for chucking

Have a look as some of Bob’s old articles - they largely remain valid. http://www.bobchapman.co.uk/html/for_woodturners.html in terms of pumps, Gast make good pumps that frequently come up on the normal auction sites, worth setting a search reminder. Simon

    Use of scrapers

I posted recently - have a look at Richard Raffen’s work, one of the great turners and not afraid to pull a scraper when task requires. https://youtube.com/channel/UC2tEGrCP1GiVwfaT4K9bcNw

    Breath of fresh air?

Just been watching some of the videos Richard Raffen has been posting. https://youtube.com/channel/UC2tEGrCP1GiVwfaT4K9bcNw A real breath of fresh air - moves tool rest without lathe at dead stop, spins blank onto a screw chuck etc etc all without loss of limbs. Irresponsible or just how...

    2021 Secret Santa Photos.

I got a awesome paper craft humming bird (very similar to those my wife and I saw out of our room window on honeymoon in Peru!). Some amazing skill in making this and presented in a fantastic turned base / glass dome. Thank you S/Santa!!!

    2021 Secret Santa.

Great job Phil - the draw and allocation is a task but the trace n trace (see what I did there, topical!) service you’ve provided is really top drawer. Now just waiting for the clock to tick round to see picks on the photo thread. Happy Xmas all! simon

    Scraper shapes.

Ground on both sides is interesting. wonder if possible to grind opposite sides so you can sharpen both and then if gets dull in use just flip it over and use other side. Would require end to be ground 50/50 but very do’able?

    Ray Keys style smock?

Ray used to do a lot of work with craft supplies both in uk and (separate company) in the US. I’d have a look there - also the us climate makes these lighter weight items more common than in uk!

Cutting large thread on small lathe?

I have an Axminster/ SEIG SC4 lathe. I would like to be able to cut a M 33X3.5 mm thread in aluminium. I would like to make a vacuum chuck for my wood turning lathe, so the thread will be to allow it to screw onto the spindle in a piece of aluminium approximately 100 mm diameter. The maximum...

Possible to covert cordeless tool to corded?

Folks I have an old 14.4 V NiCd Ryobi angle drill. I only really use it for sanding on the lathe. The batteries have long since packed up as it’s quite an old tool. is it possible to buy a cheap and cheerful power supply of some sort that would allow me to use it as a corded tool if I...

    Record cl lathes

Really depends on what sort of projects you see yourself turning. Small dishes, spindle work and the CL will be fine. Larger bowls, out of balance green timber or hollow forms and you’ll really want something with a bit more mass and probable larger spindle etc. have a look at the axmister...

Holding the lids of boxes for working

At home I’d vacuum chuck it but realise not everyone has access to that option. failing that, a shallow ‘cup’ jam chuck may work or alternatively make some wooden ‘soft jaws’ on the basis you can turn the top dome, and bead to 5 mm into flat face one way, then part off and hold on the bead in...

That one missing woodturning tool !!!

I’d like a 3 motor bambi air compressor and somewhere to put it! I currently jump out of my skin every time my cheapo sip compressor starts up as I’m trying to do some delicate piercing with air driven tool or airbrush painting!

That one missing woodturning tool !!!

They are great, esp if you turn wet wood for hollow forms etc which is where they really excel. Also handles are great, ability to retract tip and use 1” handle as tool shaft really reduces any vibration.
