2017- more of the same I suspect

Chas, are you working to a specific spec on these as to my eye, the bases and bottom 1/3rd of the bowls need to be only 30% of the diameter they are and thus allow a nice curve to develop the form to give the pieces real lift and eye appeal? I know you do this in many of your pieces so guess...

    Jaws and chuck

Chas makes the right points and his drawings are spot on. Pay particular note to where he has indicated there should be a small gap and especially to the areas indicated as providing max support. These should be at worst parallel to the face of the chuck and perhaps ever so slightly undercut...

    Jaws and chuck

Can you post a photo of the chuck with the jaws closed completely and also a second photo showing the jaw / wood interface when you've got work gripped in the chuck. I think with the above we can help else it's conjecture that may confuse as much as it helps. Thanks Simon

    You Tube Vids

General engineering rather than woodworking, but I really enjoy AvE output on YT (not for the kids though really as language more shop floor than boardroom!) S

Lathe tooling - worth a punt

Hello. Bit of newbie advice requested. I've just bought a small lathe (ML7) to make fitmemts / mounting items for my wood projects but am struggling to get a decent finish on the items I'm turning. I've had a got at grinding HSS tools after reading up / watching YT but suspect I'm going...

    earring stand in unknown wood

Very nice piece of turning: great proportion and balance; the beads / detail is really crisp, easy to lose this 'crispness' when sanding but you've lost none - very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing, Simon

Coronet Major - morse taper stuck

Some folks use a leather / thin fibre washer that prevents metal / metal contact stopping this problem. Worth a try if a repeating problem. S

Coronet Major - morse taper stuck

Can you get a bit of scrap timber onto back of drive centre to hit with mallet and drift it free? Alternatively, can you get an open spanner behind head of centre to lever against nose of headstock spindle? Photo would help. Best of luck, Simon

Axi flash sale - some decent buys

I think just standard clearence section of site that seems to be standing item now. Some good deals nonetheless but quite a few 'red dots' indicating out of stock (and I guess therefore no longer available - why can't these auto clear from view I wonder, not beyond wit of website developers I...

    Lidl oscillating multitool

Looking at these as they are as cheap as chips and handy for the odd job. Does anyone know if the blades for these are universal as I expect the supplied blades are made of cheese but paired with a decent blade could be a good occasional use tool? If they are universal, what is the accepted...

    Gloucestershire Association of Woodturners

Good to know still going strong. I was a GAW + ABWT member at one point but family / work etc have left less time so both have now lapsed. Maybe when kids bit older I'll get back to club stuff as did always look forward to club nights and esp the all day demos. S
