Topic of the week ‘Hat’ - REMINDER - KEEP THE LIST GOING

Hat making could be a topic but wasn’t quite what I’d of predicted would come up!

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 1 - Airbrushing

I would think so. It is very much a surface only coating as the paint is pretty much dry seconds after it hits the surface. Upside is that the paint only really goes on line of sight so no need to ‘burnish’ the mask down, downside would be risk of overspray so you may be will advised to mask a...

    Is this Yew?

Chas is the resident yew expert having secured about 80% of the uk stock but it would guess is it was yew. Does smell pine like? Any pink in the grain - photo not quite come out to see colours but I think I can see colours that would suggest yew. S

Metal leaf size / application tips

Hi, On the next project I’m planning I would like to use some metal leaf (not real gold) for some decorative elements. I have in mind picking some shapes out with leaf on a surface. It will be purely ‘on a shelf’ decorative item so frequent handling / wear should not be an issue. Any tips...

Weekly Discussion Topic - Week 1 - Airbrushing

Hi folks, I’ve noticed the traffic over the last six months seems to have slowed quite a lot on this section so wondered if there was an appetite for a weekly theme to share views / thoughts / techniques outside of the direct how do I solve kit problem xyz questions that are useful to the...

    WIP - “Engineers” Tool box

To a point but in the extreme it can just look matt black which is a bit of a waste as it has more to offer I think.

    WIP - “Engineers” Tool box

.......btw. I was surprised how dark the wenge inlay went when I put the finish one it (Chestnus lemon oil). Think I may leave the draws natural as they look good with just a sanded surface (320), feel nice to the touch and the grain looks good. The test piece I did just went black really and...

    WIP - “Engineers” Tool box

So, drawer construction has started. Think others on here would despair as I’m essentially making one, measuring for next (which is couple of mm out from drawing) and then custom making the next one to fit. Taking a while and certainly not a commercial speed to say the least but having fun...

    Proedge also available in white!

Firstly, fair play to the family Styles for leading from the front (and getting through the whole thing without saying proedge!). Really nice quality video and great infomercial to help a mainly mailorder business. Axminster Pro-Edge What do pro-edge owners think re pros (sorry) and cons - is...

    Any suggestions?

Firstly, To get an idea of scale I’m assuming the drawing is is mm and you’re not trying to turn to the exact dimensions quoted, 0.01mm is tough ask for hand turning! If yes to above, then I’d turn it end grain, get it into a chuck and aim to have the bowl section at the tailstock end. I’d...

    Need cheering up.............?

........then dig out your wedding video and watch it backwards. You’ll love the bit where you take the ring off, go back down the isle, jump into a car with your mates and go to the pub!   Pinched (and cleaned up a bit) from another site but made me chuckle! S

    Nice present

I think I read / heard somewhere that holly has a better chance of staying white / even if stored vertically rather than horizontally. Now, shovel full of salt as at best hear-say / old wives tale but thought I’d through it into debate incase others had more tangible experiance to confirm or...

    Basket Illusion Platter

I know exactly what you mean and this was my view. However, I’ve surprised myself. Partly due to going through a difficult 10 months at work that has come to a head recently, but being able to totally switch off with a glass of wine, classic FM and magnifying headband / loupe thing that...

    Basket Illusion Platter

Was taken by some of the work Harvey Meyer had on display and demonstrated at the recent AWGB seminar so though I’d have a go. One of those projects with attention to detail that I thought I’d never either want or be able to devote time to but I’ve actually found this very relaxing to turn and...
