    Riving knife

Basic facts of riving knives: The kerf of the blade needs to be wider than the thickness of the riving knife so the knife isn't trying to force the cut wood further apart. The plate thickness of the blade needs to be thinner than the thickness of the riving knife otherwise stresses in the wood...

    Motor Speed Controller

T4 is a variable speed, so not, not suitable. I've never tried feeding the output of one of these circuits into another. It could be a non event, it could be messy, either way I don't think it will work the way you expect. There is absolutely no point and I'd expect it to mess with any constant...

    Motor Speed Controller

I've used a module based on the same tech on an angle grinder. They work, they are cheap, they don't give soft start or constand speed under load like a proper variable speed router but if you just want to knock the speed down 10 or 20% then yes. I wouldn't spend more than 10-20 quid. In...

    Ghetto Vacuum Clamping

Better quality extractors use a "bypass" motor/ turbine. These have a separate intake for cooling air to the motor. A valuable feature especially when used with sanders that reduce airflow a lot.

    Best Dust Extraction System

Central on a run is great, but 8" port adapted into 2x4" is choking it. A proper match would be 2x5.5" so ideally step down to 6" duct or 5" at a pinch. Whatever works for you is good, but just remove the 2 to 1 adapter for 5 minutes and run the extractor to see how much air it's capable of...

    Best Dust Extraction System

What Pete said. 6" or bigger duct, 2kW+ extractor, keep your duct smooth with radiussed bends, keep flex hose to the very minimum - 1m at the extractor end, 1m at each machine. Additionally, the router and other hand tools will need a shop vac, nvd750 or camvac. If you get a canister type, spend...

Calling Xcalibur/Harvey TS owners - expressions of interest

Anyone else playing with these, look at adapting a torx socket grubscrew, capscew whatever. I bet it will last far longer than a hex before rounding out.

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

@Stevekane My 800W microwave oven draws about 1300 Watts from the mains. That's about 60% efficient. Most gas boilers are 70 to upper 80's % efficient. The "most efficient" claim is probably in the context of cooking. The simple example above shows it isn't very efficient in absolute terms.

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

Serious question or a joke ? (Sorry, 'cos it's high school physics/chemistry and a bit of a novelty so almost certainly covered in school)

    Galvanised Steel

I don't think you've been able to translate " galvanised" as hot dipped for many decades. If you want it, you have to explicitly look for it. Not common and ££. If you are buying unistrut for example, then "pre galv" is BZP and "post galv" is hot dipped. Big difference in price. Most plated...

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

All the big powertool brands will sell you an 18V hoodie or waistcoat, and motorcyclists have been using heated gear for years :)

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

This seems to be one of the better established and most reputable brands. No complaint with it except the price for what is ultimately a length of resistance wire embedded in something solid.

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

It's all there in the technology tab. It is a far infrared tech, just like the black tubes used for infrared heat in factories, etc. Far infrared as opposed to near infrared you get from the red quartz lamps on food counters and bathroom heaters. Heat the person not the air. BUT It's...

Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

I would buy single tools rather than a set. I had no interest in spindle turning when I started, so my first tools were a 3/8" bowl gouge and a parting tool. A scraper is easy to use and you'll probably want one for your bowls and your pens until you develop the skill not to need it or not so...

Any old hose that fits works on vacs like the camvac and the axminster / numatics that have air outlets in the top plates.

Cutting 4mm mild steel with jigsaw

A little OTT don't you think ? I haven't looked at the video (I have now) but did you read the @Dave Moore 's comments before the rant ? "this is the way, but his safety isn't too good" etc. All the warnings are there. I have added a note to emphasise his comments pending someone finding a...

Cutting 4mm mild steel with jigsaw

I haven't tried them yet but coincidentally I bought a 3 pack of bosch jigsaw blades from screwfix the other week. They are sold as stainless steel cutting and have a continuous small strip of tungsten carbide fixed bimetal style as the cutting edge. Pretty fine pitch teeth are ground into the...
