Welcome to ukw , re cutting straight it’s down to practice and more practice. Have you tried a Japanese pull saw as these only cut on the pull stroke and can be a lot easier to control. The other issue could be down to the material you’re trying to cut straight moving while you’re cutting.

My corded Black and Decker circular saw needs replacing

Personally I’ve found multi material blades don’t give a fine and clean cut on some material. This may not be an issue depending on what your making but worth considering.

My corded Black and Decker circular saw needs replacing

Makita Bosch or dewalt all do decent corded saws personally I’d be looking at the depth of cut and the motor output power . These small saws are ideal for trimming doors and reducing boards and other sheet goods with ghe aid of a straight edge..

    Beginner tools / timber advise

Car boots , Facebook m p , eBay , gumtree and of course the for sale section on this site are all decent ways of obtaining quality tools at a reasonable price . There are then drill guides that allow you to drill perpendicular to your work piece from fairly cheap to very expensive some of these...

SawStop, stops on contact with skin is coming to Europe soon!

There will of course be always be those individuals who lack the thinking process and skills to evaluate the safety of their actions outside of people with mental illnesses and other learning difficulties. Many many years ago as a child I was given a wasp by my sister who said you have to hold...

This is pretty much how I work , I’ve made mistakes and I’ve learnt from them . I have no intention to injure myself or anyone else but nothing is impossible the safer you work the less likely you will be hurt but if all else fails the more safety features a tool has the better for the user ...

As above their will always be accidents it the nature of being human . You only have to see most of the material on utube to see examples of unsafe practices but if you are completely new to woodworking and your only source of information is utube there is nobody to say actually that’s unsafe...

SawStop, stops on contact with skin is coming to Europe soon!

Again I agree that most woodworking machines can be dangerous especially if used beyond their intended purpose or by not following the makers instructions or removing the gaurd or riving knife etc but we are talking about accidental contact with the blade spinning at full speed and receiving a...

    Beginner tools / timber advise

Hi and welcome 🤗 I’d say depending on your miter saw capabilities a decent blade , you can then cut down a larger piece of timber into coasters unless you have the funds for a bandsaw. Next imo would be a pillar drill and a set of Forstner bits for your tea light holders . As for timber...

Personally in schools and colleges and any type of training establishments then it should be as safe as possible- why you may ask -when I did woodworking at school we were not allowed to use the table saw bandsaw or planer - it’s to dangerous I was told - but your a teacher and and I’m here to...

SawStop, stops on contact with skin is coming to Europe soon!

Now I’ve heard various arguments for and against . Some are content with their own experience and their push sticks and a organised and tidy workshop , they utilise all of their experience and safe working practices and I have no problem with any of these methods apart from one - we can’t...

SawStop, stops on contact with skin is coming to Europe soon!

100% agree - just can’t see why some are against a safety device that can save you from the operating theatre and life changing injuries. There is no legislation to say you must purchase a saw stop table saw and even if there was are the heath and safety police going to carry out dawn raids to...

Need some sanity checking on slightly unusual shed floor build

I think you could use pretty much anything you can get at the best price . Breeze blocks will last forever and can often be purchased for a few ££ it’s amazing how many folk have left over after building work just lying around. Reclaimed railroad sleepers again have already stood the test of...

Need some sanity checking on slightly unusual shed floor build

Ok this is where the initial 3x2 //2x2 // is secured to the slabs - are we talking about lightweight decorative slabs or something more substantial like the old grey council 2x2 or 3x2 slabs you will have no problem fixing Eg a 3x2 to said slabs . Obviously 2x9 is much heavier and it would...

Need some sanity checking on slightly unusual shed floor build

Plenty of long screws available that won’t break the bank. I use the ones that have a torx head as these are less likely to strip . Multiple ways to achieve this . You could fix a 3x2 to the paving slabs using concrete screws- they just need a pilot hole as per the manufacturer instructions...
